PS2 cleaning/repair

I'm getting a PS2 soon that has a couple of issues. It doesn't handle the blue and black discs well. It handles the silver ones (most common) perfectly. It's the 5001 model. I've been searching Google for some answers on how to clear this problem. The 2 most popular answers are: open it up and use some canned air to clean it and secondly call Sony and have them exchange it for a refurb costing $45.

Can anyone add to my confusion? :)

I know what will work 90% of the time. Put little pieces of scotch tape around the inner ring of the disk where there is no information. If you look real close at a black or blue bottom disk that you try to play in one of those model PS2s, there is a perfect "scuff ring" on the inner part of the disk. This is where you want to put the pieces of scotch tape (or whatever you use to make the cd spinner catch enough of the disk to spin it.). I have the same prob with my old PS2 and it works for me all the time. I use scotch tape because its easy to get off and won't fall off inside the system. Try that and get back to me.

Opening and cleaning a PS2 is really a breeze to do and should have it working again in no time.

My PS2 is from Launch and it still works fine with a little cleaning about every 8-10 months. A little regreasing of the bars does not hurt either.

Thanks and sorry for posting in the wrong place.

What bars need "regreasing"?

Also, since I'm going to take off the shell I was thinking of replacing it with one of those toploaders. Anyone do this and is it ok to do?
