If I were to pick just one, then it would have to be Phantasy Star 1 on Sega Master System. Very challenging and great graphics for its time, and definitely more challenging than the sequels.
Really? Aside from the silly beginning of the game (where there was literally only one fight you could win, the rest you had to run away from until you leveled a couple times), I didn't find PS1 challenging at all. The dungeons were complex, but easier to map than #2, and the fights were much less challenging than 2.
I'm surprised (in a good way!) to see PS1 topping so many people's lists, tho! I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Final Fantasy VIII.
Odd. Decent by RPG standards, but universally considered to be the worst Final Fantasy game. Any particular reason? And, not trying to be an ass by saying this, but have you played any of the other FF games?
You'd be surprised just how many people really love FFVIII, above and beyond all the other Final Fantasy titles.
Most Final Fantasy games are pretty widely enjoyed, but 8 is a love it or hate it kind of game, it seems.
its the exceptional

For consoles, my absolute favorite has always been the original Dragon Warrior. I know it seems incredibly tedious to many today, but it's a game I can play over and over, level grinding and all. There's also a huge nostalgia factor that plays into it.
For computers, my absolute favorite is Fallout. It was a nice break from your D&D style RPGs, it had some good and dark humor thrown in for good measure, and the storyline was very well thought out. I remember the first time saw the Master on my monitor and heard him talk. Using three voices was a cool idea, and it definitely made him unique among bosses in RPGs.

I agree - it's weird but I know of a few people who love VIII and even a guy personally who thinks its the best FF of all.
Weird, indeed! :)

ff8 was a very very differnt rpg, had a very differnt story and a very complex hard to get into battle system
the draw system was love or hate no in between, the charecters were far more real then any other ff charecters to date, squall was kinda a self invovled jerk..very unique compared to the goody goody heroes from most other rpgs. the general flow of the game was very differnt then any other ff game which I think is why everyone hates on it soo much. still its one you could spend days just improving on your charecters, collecting trinkets and customzing your spell lists, it falls in the same catagory as super hydlyde dragon warrior 3 and ultima exodus (all favorates of mine as well)

It's probably mostly due to nostalgia, but I still think Phantasy Star II is my favorite. I haven't seen a game since that had the style, music and atmosphere that I've liked more.
I actually just got the bug to play through it again a few days ago. I have to admit though, some of those complex multi-level mazes/dungeons are obnoxious.

There is but one thing that might top Chrono Trigger, and that is the mighty Planescape: Torment for the PC, a game so good that I had to stop playing in fear that it would consume me. When will I have the time and energy to give that masterpiece the attention it so richly deserves?

What you say is true enough, but you neglect to point out that the story is generally broken: incomplete, unsatisfying, and quite incomprehensible at times.

Tell me about it. They're notorious, and they all look alike. The goal is to totally over-equip and level-up the hell out of your doodz to make it easier, but that much work doesn't appeal to everybody.

Come on!!!
Too many favorites to pick! Seriously! Instead how about I pick one that I feel is a hidden gem and many probably never experienced.

Even once you level/equip to the point where you can survive a decent amount of time, the dungeons are just evilly long and complex. I can never remember its name, but the one where you have to keep falling through the holes gives me nightmares.
That being said, I finally met my goal a couple months ago and finished the entire game without looking at a map :) Took me around half a year... I'd get frustrated and set it aside for awhile. I'm glad I did it tho!

if you just rush through the game one time hell yeah its confusing as all hell, once you've played it a second (or third time) taking your time to soak everything in and finding some of the important easilly missed backstory it ends up being a very full story (i'd say the same about 7 as well)

Bah! The only thing to find is more loose ends that the developers didn't manage to properly tie up or even do anything with!
I'll be quiet now.

There's no way to understate that point- I completely agree.

It is worth it, isn't it? That's some awesome gaming, going through PSII with no maps.
I feel like I'm cheating a little bit, but I guess I just don't have the patience that I used to have- this time around I'm using the little guidebook that came with it. I want to enjoy the greatness of PSII without all the frustration... and I've beaten it before so I figure I can get away with that. :D

morrowind: sucked up more time than any other game
diablo II: comes in at second place. playing online was just addicting, and the single player was almost just as bad!
disgaea: when it comes to making as badass a party as you can, this one cannot be beat
chrono trigger: all around good, I couldn't put it down

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
Until I played this game, I never thought a video game could get this close to "real" role-playing. Also, the story and "lore" of the world are simply brilliant.

No one has mentioned mine yet.
Deus Ex.
Along with Fallout 2, Deus Ex is one of the most (if not the most) immersive and satisfying RPG's I've ever played. If you haven't played it, you should--you won't regret it.

I'm ashamed to say this, but I could not get more than 10 minutes into deus ex. I kept dying during the first sneaking part. everyone said that game was so good, so I wanted to give it a shot, but I couldn't make it past that part. fallout 2 also gave me problems. it is a very good game though.
