My magazine subscription to Game Informer ended in march. I really didnt feel like renewing it right now but wanted to read the new issue. So I go to EB games to buy the new issue and while im there I decide to pick up a Xbox Live points card. When I get to the counter the clerk tells me I cant buy the magazine. He tells me I can only get it if I buy a subscription with a discount card. Is this true? I ask him why the hell it has a bar code and price on it and he replies he doesnt know why. I call him a motherf---ing liar and leave. I was just wondering if hes trying to fool me or not. Its been a bad day and I wasnt going to get jerked around by some chump.

They can, but it isn't intuitive at all. Most part timers I've run into have no idea how to do it.

This is true; if you scan the barcode on the mag, it's really the barcode for the actual subscription, not the magazine itself.
To be honest, it's cheaper to just by the sub in the long run.

I didn't think it was April Fool's Day until April?

Mature...
but... You can do it, they just have to look up the sub manually and chances are they probably weren't taught how to do it.

When I worked for Gamestop the Magazine and the Subscription were the same price and that's what got you the discount card. You certainly don't need a card to buy the magazine, otherwise it would be a nasty little circle where no one could buy one.

Wal-Mart carries Game Informer, so you can always try there if you just want to get one issue.

Oh well. If I acted immature I really dont care. I know these guys have some kind of quota to meet with these subs and if the guy is going to lie to me about not being able to sell me a mag than fuck him. I know this guy knows how to sell a mag seperately because he has been at this particular store for at least a year. After a year and he still doesnt know how to sell it seperately? I dont think so.

Yeah, except a year ago it was an EB Games, not a Gamestop, and the process for selling individual magazines changed. The searching for SKUs (which you have to do for magazines, scanning the bar code has never worked at EB or GS for some reason) was messy at EB and got worse under GS's POS system.
I would guess he really didn't know how to do it, which is inexcusable, but not worthy of being called a mother-bleeping liar.

I wouldn't be surprised actually if he didn't. Like FantasiaWHT said, in the old eb system you couldn't scan the bar codes on the magazines you had to actually look them up. I worked for EB for 4 years and in 3 different stores and I can say I was the only one, besides managers, who knew how to ring up magazines properly.
I haven't worked for EB since the merger but with there screwy system I wouldn't be surprised if only one person in the store knew how to do it. Then again I always just wound up giving out free GMR's.

God, I'm glad I don't work retail anymore.

Next time you go there tell them "No, hit F1, the SKU is under there you retard." They'll wonder how the hell you know the system but whatever.
But yeah, the barcode immediately jumps into a prompt for the subscription card. The clerk has to hit F1 and select "GI single issue."
That guy was likely just being an ass to try and make you buy a subscription card.

Provided the manager actually put the sku in there, of course. It doesn't happen automatically.

I used to just give magazines away with any halfway decent purchase. They're not in the store inventory, anyway

I wouldn't mind getting a subscription to the mag but they never offer it to me or ask me about it the once every 3 months I go there so oh well.
