personally this list is enough for me for the original xbox. I wonder what everyone else prefers.

Guilty Gear xx2
svc chaos snk vs. capcom
Street fighter anniversary
king of fighters
marvel vs. capcom 2
capcom fighters evolution
snk vs. capcom 2
samurai showdown 5
the king of fighters neowave

Sigh to bad these games arent online on other systems.

The NeoGeo and Dreamcast are about equal for me. Both have an excellent line up of fighting games.

The obvious: Neo Geo

The not so obvious - Sega Saturn(including imports)
Good games such as:
X-man vs Street Fighter
Marvel vs Street Fighter
Vampire Savior
Street Fighter Collection
Street Fighter Alpha
and many SNK Fighters were also ported to the Saturn.

Honorable mention - Sega Dreamcast
Hot titles such as:
Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves
Last Blade 2
Capcom vs SNK 1 & 2
Marvel vs. Capcom 1 & 2
King of Fighters 99,00,01,02
Street Fighter III 3rd Strike

I think the PS2(includesPS1). Lots a selection, not always the best versions.

You get all the Xbox stuff plus alot of others.

Jojo's
Vampire Savior-Darkstalkers
Street fighter Alphas
More Guilty Gears
A bunch of the Street Fighter and Capcom vs games.
Mortal Kombats

Dreamcast gets a nod for their sweet port of Jojo's
damn...I love that game.

Best console right now ? hands down PS2 for all the arcade ports and new releases coming out.

Otherwise just use pc and mame ?

I would pick Neo Geo though, one day I will own a real one!

In my opinion the best consoles for 2D fighting games are Neo Geo, Saturn and Dreamcast.

Neo Hands down...everyone should know that.

Neo is the obvious answer, though I'd give big respect to the Saturn, particularly a Jap one too.

NeoGeo does seem to be the obvious answer, but you have to remember it's only really SNK fighting games. If you don't really like SNK's style, it's probably not the best choice. If you do, then you're well away; all 10 years of King of Fighters, 6 Samurai Spirits/Shodowns!, the Fatal Fury series inc. Garou, the wonderful Last Blades etc..

If you're more into Capcom fighters then the Saturn, PStwo, Xbox or Dreamcast will probably serve you better. There's a huge amount of Capcom fighters for those systems.

The Dreamcast, PStwo and Xbox do have a good mix of fighting games from all the main players: SNK, Capcom, Sammy etc... That way you get to play King of Fighters, Darkstalkers and Guilty Gear on one console, which is a nice mixture.

The Neo Geo has a lot of fighters, but in contrast it also has a lot of shitty ones, and they're almost all pricey as hell.

Saturn has a good lineup of mid-90s games fairly cheap, if you include the imports. Dreamcast has a good selection but very few arcade perfect ones.

Now, the Playstation 2 on the other hand. It's got the lineup.
Alpha Collection
SF Collection
KOF 2k/2k1
KOF 2k2/2k3
Guilty Gear X
Guilty Gear XX
Capcom Fighting Evolution(shitty as it is)
capcom vs snk 2
marvel vs capcom 2
game compilations from Midway and Capcom with their early fighters on them
a decent lineup, but then you look at the imports...
Guilty Gear XX Reloaded
GGXX Slash
King of Fighters XI
Melty Blood
KOF 94 rebout
Fatal Fury Collection
KOF Collections
Last Blade Collection
MOTW
Rumble Fish
NeoGeo Battle Colosseum
Samurai Shodown V
Samurai Shodown Tenka
KOF Neowave
Power Instinct Matrimelee
SVC Chaos
So far so good, right? And then you take into account PS1 fighters, which, though not all of good of quality as their saturn counterparts, nevertheless exist.
SF Collection 1
SF Collection 2
SF Alpha 2
SF Alpha 3
Guilty Gear
Darkstalkers
Darkstalkers 3
Capcom vs SNK Pro
KOF 95
KOF 99

Quite frankly it's a no contest. PS2 has the best 2d fighting game lineup for the price. I love the neo and all, but man...this is cheaper!

I have to say Sega Saturn in my opinion.. the wonderful 6 button layout, the 4 Meg Cart for practically no loading between games and the fast, fast gameplay.

The neo geo I love to death but in all reality it's not much of a big deal anymore because of mame and emulators.

The truth is the NG collections on the ps2 for them ost part are 99% perfect ports with only last blade collection having some minor sound issues, otherwise the rest of them are just like the originals AND they have remixed sound options and other things, add to the fact that the ps2 has tons of capcom stuff like the SF collections and vampire darkstalkers, then melty blood, fist of the north star and all the other semi modern ports...

You have a winner

The only way the neo would matter is if you want 100% authentic carts and the neo experience, which as I said above is not much of a factor anymore unless your an anal purist.

I would say the xbox is a close second only because of the fact you can play alot of them online, seeing as how arcades are hard to come by, that is a huge plus.

The DC ? whats so great about it ? sure it still has shmup support and had alot of cool 2d fighter ports, but the ps2 is just as good and better in alot of ways.

Remember this is "Best console for 2d fighter(S)".

PS2 ftw!

My lack of modding skills leaves me using the Saturn and Dreamcast for my fighter fix... not really disappointed at all. My wrists are starting to hate me though.

/Marvel vs. Capcom 2 cost me more than my Dreamcast did! (but then again, isn't it like that for almost everyone?)

Sega Saturn would be my pick, for its near spot on ports of the alot of the Neo Geo Fighting games, at a fraction of the price. You also get alot of the awsome stuff from Capcom, along with some others. The system is built pretty tough and can take a beating. I pick it #1 due to the cost factor and the fact that it has alot more games to choose on it at affordable prices.

Dreamcast#2

PS2 by a mile, IMO. It has a massive selection of great games as ubersaurus pointed out above. Moreso, they're generally pretty dang good ports. Another factor is that good, quality arcade sticks are easy as pie to get reasonably cheap for the PS2 and yet another is that various mods are available to enable you to play import games with little hassle (ranging from hard drives to swap tricks to soldered mod chips).

Aside from the PS2, I'd have to say the Xbox. The main problem there is getting a quality controller, though.

Dreamcast comes in third, with a small but nice selection of games (a few crap ports here and there but all of the goodness outweighs that). Again, the problem with the DC is getting a decent stick at an affordable price.

Price hurts the Neo Geo a lot and the Saturn games had missing frames and load times that you don't have to put up with on the PS2/Xbox. PS1 was a complete crap shoot with a little good (Guilty Gear! SFZ3!) and a whole lot of bad (KoF*, XvSF).

Saturn, Dreamcast & the Xbox

i would say the Neo Geo for older fighters and the Dreamcast for a mix of old and new. id say the xbox comes in third.

NeoGeo>Saturn>Dreamcast.

Heck i would count the PS2 but i haven't played to many 2d fighters on it.

Since some are still import only:p

Btw controll issue isn't a problem for me either i do have a, PS2 Saturn pad and a Nuby SF pad as well.

I will also go with NeoGeo , DC , and Saturn - also I think saturn had the best 2D graphics of any system next to the NeoGeo

Well i would count neo geo but the sheer price point is going to make me ignore it from my list.

For current overall i'd say ps2 and dc for import and domestic. its really no contest due to the volume of titles for them. hell with the US Ps2 theres 10 fighters (2 KoF, 2 SF, 1 MvC, 3 GG, 1 capcom, 1 CvS), i say thats pretty well rounded but you also have loads of PS1 games to boot.

Saturn, easily. I like Neo Geo, but it lacks variety and the games are way too expensive, plus sometimes the ports to other systems are better (added features, CD audio, etc.). Dreamcast has a nice lineup of 2d fighters, but not as much. I can't say I've ever had the urge to play a single 2d fighter on PS2, except perhaps Melty Blood.

Another ring-in for SNK's Neo-Geo (CD, AES, MVS).
Second up would be between Saturn and Dreamcast.
Finally, PS1/2 games.

You could hunt around online for some PC games that might have been abandoned or become free. I know there's a decent following behind Mugen, you should check that out especially if you have an arcade stick for PC.

I agree. Capcom fans should go with the Dreamcast. SNK fans stick with Neo Geo.

Dreamcast...best of both worlds...Garou MOTW and SF3 3rd Strike..pure bliss.

Well, unless you want an accurate port of SF3, because then you'd have to fire up the PS2 or Xbox. Now MvC2, that's a different story.

I agree, but for those who dont import PS2...then you have two ways to get Garou MOTW. DC or Neo
