Unfortunately, everything after that great title screen is an unplayable mess.
Fishing games? Really? Out of all the things to simulate via a video game, fishing is near the bottom of the list.

If he's a black bass why is he BLUE?
Game makes no sense. I've NEVER seen a blue fish wear glasses.

Actually, I really enjoy the fishing sims. Back in the day owned several of them including the Black Bass, Blue Marlin, and TNN Bass Tournament. I'll buy any fishing game I find in the wild. I'm not sure why I enjoy them so much, especially since I already do my fair share of real fishing.
As far as The Black Bass is concerned, the fish intellegence may be severly lacking, but the game is far from unplayable.

I have to agree, The black bass was the first really good fishing sim game back in the NES days. I still have found memories of playing that game. trying to find the good big bass fishing holes, trying to reel in that big fish without snapping the line, and getting the boat back before time was called. Great series of games.

When I first loaded up the game, I thought it was a pimping simulator. I was sure that if the title screen looks like that, I'd be slapping some fish hos in no time.
In actuality, though, I do like Black Bass USA. This pic is from the Japanese prequel which never made it over here in the states. The version we got isn't nearly as funny, though Black Bass USA does treat us to a fish tearing through the screen on the title screen. My girlfriend particuarly loves the game. She forced me to buy it for her ebay. At gunpoint.

Old school fishing lingo for a "Largemouth Bass". I don't know how this name got started...
I never got to play Black Bass but I have played Super Black Bass on the SNES. That is the only fishing sim I really like. When I was little my uncle and a couple of cousins would play through the game taking turns catching fish.
ahh the memories.

But in my parts, blue fish with tophats are quite common.

Something quite relaxing with a fishing sim done well. I must say that I do enjoy the fishing bits in Twilight Princess. Watching the line and the motion of the water. Shot term relaxation therapy.

How about Legend of the River King/Sea King for GB? Fishing with RPG elements!

In the NES game, most lakes only have 2-3 good places to catch fish. I guess that is true in real life, as well. It is frustrating burning up "game time" only to hook a fish and find out it is a pike, a rainbow trout or some other creature that doesn't even help your final score. At least you can tell what it is before reeling it all the way in, though. The frantic music that plays while you are fighting them is also priceless.

I really liked Super Black Bass, but the DS version was such a disappointment :(

Yes, as you point out above this is essentailly true in real life as well. The "other" types of fish add to the realism too.....now if they could just simulate your drunken buddies falling in the water LOL
