There won't ever be a movie based on a video game that wins an Academy Award. You can take that to the bank. Though I am sure some game-to-movie projects have ended up winning a Razzie or something like that.

I mean it is hard enough to make a "good" movie, one that might win an award, without the added pressure of having that movie be based on a game and making THOSE fans happy.

i don't think i've ever seen a video game movie that wasn't horrible. i know there will be alot of people telling me i'm crazy, but game movies are usualy just hollywood garbage. i've heard people rave about mortal kombat (no pun intended), and i thought that movie was the biggest pile of crap ever. who cares about my oppinion though. most people think the movies i like are crap.

...You've never heard of FInal Fantasy VII: Advent Children or Super Mario Bros.: The Movie, have you?

FF7:AC was quite possibly the best video game-based movie ever, and SMB was so cheezy, it was friggin' awesome!

I personally liked Doom, Resident Evil, FF Spirits Within, and Silent Hill. FFV11 Advent Children was a snoozer. I couldnt stay awake to see the ending it was so boring. I think its just too hard to make a video game based movie that will please everyone. People will always complain that a certain part of the game wasnt mentioned or shown.

Super Mario Bros. was so cheesy that it sucked balls! The king being turing into a drooling mushroom.. c'mon!

I would point to the first "Mortal Kombat" movie, but it suffers from sub-par American fight sequences.

But I might be biased as I watched it after seeing a Jackie Chan movie. :)

I think that Silent Hill was the greatest game movie so far, never liked FF so yeah to me both movies sucked Doom wasn't so great either. I think this mortal combat will be a little better mostly cause it leaves out the 80's and 90's cheesy fight scenes. but as far as academy award winning probably never. EVER!

Some will be better than others, but there's no way ever that any VG based film can seriously compare to a real masterpiece.

VG films will always, always be cash ins, milking the cow.

TO be honest, I watched it with some friends recently and we all thought that it was the biggest pile of shite we'd seen for a long time...It's amazingly well done, but the story is crap IMHO

I liked Silent Hill, was never the biggest fan of the games but the movie was pretty cool. I liked AC too, mainly because I've finished FFVII several dozen times (almost). Didn't think much of Mortal Kombat/Dead or Alive though. And the less said about Street Fighter the better. :-/

I thought the best movie to game adaptations were E.T., Jaws and Friday the 13th.

Oh wait, this is about video game to movie adapt.
To reitterate some of the earlier posts, good moves include: Silent Hill, Resident Evil, Mortal Kombat, Final Fantasy and Street Fighter. These are live action selections of course, and there are some good animes out there too. I still can't believe how Doom and House of the Dead turned out, it's a real pitty.

Achievement in visual effects
Best animated feature film of the year

Two categories where a video game movie could be a contender.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Doom was an excellent movie. From start to finish, it was about space marines fighting zombie monsters on Mars. Almost every weapon in the game was there, including the punch attack. All the actors preformed well, even The Rock (who never once did the eyebrow-thing).

If you didn't like Doom, you were looking for faults instead of watching a movie. Going from video game to film, they changed the original source of the evil: ancient Martian DNA instead of Hell. I'm not complaining. Resident Evil diverged farther from the source than that.

Like most others, I thought RE wasn't an awful movie. Not great, but not bad... A good way to pass a couple hours. I remember seeing the previews to Silent Hill, never did see it though. Now me thinks I'll have to rent it since this thread got me thinking about it again.

I think it's crap that REMAKES win the majority of the awards but video game based movies won't ever.

That Sonic anime movie was pretty good.

The best video game movie was the Street Fighter anime from the 90s.

The best live action game movie was Silent Hill (which was actually pretty friggin' good).

That Sonic anime movie was pretty good.

Which one? "Sonic The Hedgehog: The Movie" the one where that human girl has a crush on him?

I liked it because it was pre-introduction of the 85 billion other pointless Sonic friends and 35 million other hedgehogs.

Put me in as another fan of the first MK movie. Originally, I just wanted to watch it for shits and giggles, but it wasn't as bad as I thought on the initial viewing. Then I saw it about ten times afterwards, and I decided it was good.

Though, I don't think I have to say that MK: Annihilation sucked Motaro's hairy balls. :puke:

The first Resident Evil movie was great for what it was and RE:A had the best teaser trailer ever, sadly the couldn't capitalize on it tho. Extinction looks pretty sweet tho, but we have been fooled before.

Silent Hill is the best game-to-movie adaption yet, the environment and sometimes cheesiness fit perfectly, plus it was a generally creepy movie.

As always tho, don't watch these movies expecting everything to be perfect, because they won't be. Most people go in all fanboyed up and do nothing but bitch about every little thing. I've learned to lower my expectations, take the movie for what it is and I usually end up enjoying the damn thing*.

*This does include anything made by Uwe Boll, no matter how low your expectations are, he will always make a bad movie.

I think Land of the Dead or Dawn of the Dead would have been better suited to the Resident Evil name than the RE movies. How on earth can you make a PG-13 RE? It's not RE unless there's plenty of gore. That said, I did enjoy the RE movies a little bit. Silent Hill, for me, is by far the best (mainstream) video game to movie adaptation. I've seen that movie about 5 times. Would have been better if Akira Yamaoka made an OST for it.

I'm a fan of the Street Fighter Animated Movie, but in general I don't think that games usually have the character depth required for a feature film. Unless it's the sort of epic game which plays like a movie anyways, like maybe Zelda or something.
