Can the text be changed to english on the interface or is it just Kanji always when changing options or checking your memory card? Are the updates for firmware here in the USA work on a JPN system?

I'm pretty sure it's all the same. Text probably defaults to Japanese, and can be set to English. If you use custom firmware you can even turn off the region lock for UMD movies (there is no lock for games already).

Is it true that the Square and Circle buttons have been switched around on the JPN PSP?

no it's circle and x. in the usa, x is to select something, in japan circle is used. this can be reversed in custom firmware, and only matters in the menu. the games are whatever they are programmed for.

in US games, X button usually "confirms" and O button "cancels"
in Japan, O button "confirms" commands and X button "cancels"
buttons are in the normal layout
edit: walrusmonger beats me to it

Where can I find this firmware to reverse them?

The button commands are actually only applicable in the games. US games will use the same button commands regardless of what region system it is being played on.
(of note, the information I am posting is from experience from PlayStation and PlayStation 2 use. My wife is getting a Japan PSP this weekend and I will have 100% conformation on all info at that time. Sorry if I may have misled)

Please do, this is pretty interesting, but I'm starting to lean towards just getting a USA PSP to avoid this mishap
