Got my 360 new this X-mas, but the DVD drive is horrendously loud. Its fine when I play regular xbox games, or any game on my hard drive. But when I boot up a 360 game, the dvd drive spins as fast as it can, and it is wayyy louder than any of my friend's systems.

Are these things suppsoed to be THAT loud? Should I send my 360 in for repairs before the warranty is up this winter"?

They are that loud (although the brand-newest units apparently have a somewhat quieter drive). Mine's in my entertainment center behind a door due to the noise, which causes its own set of problems due to poor ventilation.

Yeah, they're supposed to be that loud. I couldn't believe it either. Halo 2 was fine but when I popped in Gears for the first time, it was so fucking loud that I had to turn the volume up just to drown out the sound (and my 360 sits in a stereo cabinet too).

You'll get use to it after a while though. If not, you could always get one of the newer 360's that have the quieter drives.

Same thing happens to my 360 as well during Gears of War and F.E.A.R., like whenever a character starts whispering in dialogue in F.E.A.R., I can't even hear what he's saying because of my 360's DVD drive.

The noise of the 360 is definitely one of it's biggest faults. It does bother me to quite a degree. Especially after I got my PS3. My PS3 seems to be whisper quiet, and the 360 is the exact opposite. I always knew the 360 was loud, but it didn't sink in how loud it was till I had the PS3 for comparison.

I will definitely get another 360 when the versions with the 65nm chip die come out. Supposedly these 360's will have much lower noise ratio's, and will also feature a smaller power supply. It's unfortunate that the new Elite 360's still have the 90nm chip in them.

I've also heard that via a firmware update, the drives in the 360 are going to run at a slower speed, which will cause the loading times to increase quite a bit, but will also reduce the noise somewhat. I wonder if it will be an option that we can check or uncheck?

Not gonna happen.

Try it with the HD-DVD drive. Even worse.

Or one of those Intercooler things. I returned mine a week after I got it because it was just too much.

Noise hasn't been an issue with mine, and mine was a launch/pre-launch console. (I got it a few weeks before the official launch)

Maybe the fact that it's in a cabinet is what's causing the problem in the first place - is the console well ventilated/away from other things? Mine sits on the lower shelf of my TV shelving unit on a glass shelf on a hardwood floor - haven't had a problem with burns or original 360 games.

mine isnt in a cabinet, it sits right next to the TV, easily 2 feet from any wall.

I also have one of those stands that have fans in the bottom to help with the cooling.
