I just picked up a Satun....hurray!!! another mouth to feed.
Anyway, I was wondering if any of the Saturn versions of the PCE,MD, and
SFC games have been updated enough to be worth me picking up another copy.
The series/games that popped into my head where:
Thunder Force
Twinbee
Gradius
Life Force/Salamander
Steam Hearts
Parodius
or recommend something I missed
I really love my TF3 and would probally pick up a Satrun ver. even for a little touched up sound/grfx quality.

The best part about the Thunderforce release was that with 3 purchases, you had all 5. The same applies to both the Gradius and Life Force collections with a few exceptions. I'd recomend getting the Konami Antiques Collection as it has a large number of shooters on it in adition to many other games. Also, Capcom Generations 1 has 1942, 1943, and 1943x but as they were 8bit you may not consider them worth it. I dont know much about the Twinbee or Steam Hearts release sadly.

Actually, the ThunderForce packs are not as good as the originals, especially the first (TF2 & 3). It has streaming CD audio that pauses mid-stage to start up again. If they had thrown a version of the original TF on there, and/or the X68000 TF2, it would have been a must have. The second TF pack is worth it though, just to have a good home version of ThunderForce AC. Thunder Spirits on the SNES totally sucks.
As for the others, the Konami packs are all excellent and highly recommended. I can't really say anthing bad about them other than the lack of tate for the Twinbee pack. Salamander 2 is especially cool. Steam Hearts has never been a great game, but the Saturn version has the best gameplay and graphics, at the expense of slightly censored hentai.

these are the Saturn SHMUPS that I recommend:
Assault Suit Leynos 2 (Target Earth 2)
Battle Garegga (inspired by Gun Frontier, similar to Sonic Wings 1,2,3)
Blast Wind (Technosoft vertical SHMUP)
G-Vector (similar to Panzer Dragoon)
Guardian Force (similar to Granada)
Gun Frontier (Taito vertical SHMUP)
Hyper Duel (Technosoft horizontal SHMUP)
Kingdom Grand Prix (the world's only racing SHMUP)
Kyukyoku Tiger 2 Plus (Twin Cobra 2)
Metal Black (Gun Frontier 2)
Prikura Daisakusen (similar to Arcus Odyssey)
Radiant Silvergun (enough said!)
Skull Fang (Vapor Trail 3)
Sol Divide (similar to Wings of Wor)
Sonic Wings Special (Aero Fighters 1,2,3)
Stellar Assault SS (Shadow Squadron 2)
Strikers 1945 (similar to 1942)
Stikers 1945 2 (similar to 1943)
Thunderforce 5 (enough said!)
Wolf Fang (Vapor Trail 2)

Hell yeah! The Saturn version of TSS is the best in my opinion. I like it better than the Neo original for its extra characters, voice acting and that added opening anime. A true must have, though be warned. It is really more of a 2 player game and your friends will look at you like you're crazy for about 10 minutes. Then, they will thank you.

In the case of the TwinBee pack, you get two games, and it's the only way you're going to play TwinBee Yahho! on a console, other than getting the PlayStation version of the same release or the newly released TwinBee collection for PSP. As for Detana!! TwinBee, it's a direct port of the arcade, cheapness and unlimited continues and all. I actually prefer the PC Engine version since they consolized the game quite nicely, making it balanced and play like a home game, not to mention taking advantage of the full screen, since, as was mentioned, the Saturn pack has no tate mode (there is a yucky stretched out mode, though).

Get Batsugun for your ass!
Most of Iron Draggon's list is good... althouh I'm not sure how Skull Fang or Metal Black got on there. Gun Frontier left me limp as well.

Amen!
Surprised nobody's mentioned Soukygurentai yet. Sure, it's no 16-bit remake, but it's one of my fave Saturn shooters.
