I don't normally throw around terms like "Best game ever" but... holy shit... Best. Game. Ever.
And the Gamecube is looking pretty damn good in the grand scheme of things. Anyone who dares call this machine a disaster should step back and look at all the games that are bonafide ***** games. Mario Sunshine. Metroid Prime. Zelda: Wind Waker. Animal Crossing. Smash Bros. Melee. It's an amazing system and it's only going to get better.
The thing I can't get over is the water effects... pretty amazing.

I got mine about a week ago, but I haven't even touched it yet. In fact, I gave it to a friend to play since I hate to see good games sit there unplayed.

I knew I'd read one of these posts before I could actually get my copy. Sons of bitches!!!
EB told me they should have it today when I asked last week, but the Microplay told a customer yesterday that they'd come in Wednesday. I hope that was for non pre-order people only :D
@Charlie: Don't forget Eternal Darkness - I haven't played many survival horror games but this one kicks serious ass.
I was thinking this past week, as I played, while on vacation, all of Metroid Fusion. It's too bad Samus is too 'futuristic' for a game like Soul Calibur. As much as I'll enjoy seeing Link in there (and I'm definitely picking up the Cube version over the others) he just doesn't seem to fit as well as Samus might.
EDIT: No go at EB for yours truly. The street date is officially tomorrow and they're forced to stick to it. Curses!

Wow, that's a lot of five star games... seven by my count. Now when I rate games, I make sure not just any game earns the honor. But seven (!) five star games in about a year's time? That is unheard of. Now I rated each Dreamcast game and I believe I gave out four 5-Star ratings. To Soul Caliber, Chu Chu Rocket, Skies of Arcadia, and NFL 2K (the original one). Don't get me wrong, a lot of games for it were borderline five-star titles, but weren't quite there.
The Gamecube, on the other hand, hasn't even really 'shot their wad' yet. Look at all the games left that should come close to five stars. F-Zero, Pikmin 2, Wario World, Soul Caliber 2, Mario Golf... plus a lot of good stuff that will be annouced at E-3.

I'm in the second Dungeon.. This Zelda might be the best yet!
Came across two bugs though. One is I started the game with 10 hours of play?? Not sure what that is about. second there is an invisable wall on the exit ledge at the Deku Tree area, not bad but noticeable. The first dungeon was mind blowingly cool, not extremely hard (it was the first dungeon) but there were a couple of secrets that took me a bit.
Where is everyone else?
Oh!! Not a spoiler but for all you who just got the game home.. BAIT! Get BAIT.

I love the graphics, but gameplay and music wise, it's not living up to the hype for me so far. But, I'll grant you that I'm only in the first dungeon and I expect it to get better.

The music is ok.. It's OOT music.. Sun comes up.. OOT theme comes up with some added rifts..
The gameplay is the exact same as OOT, the only real innovation here is the graphics engine. Is that so bad? OOT is one of my favorite games ever.
:/ maybe
After finishing the 3rd dungeon I can tell that sailing the ocean is going to be a lot like watching Waterworld. I don't understand why they put random crap into the ocean.. like slalom courses that get you 1 Rupie.. If your going to make it an ocean make it empty and the islands big.. It's almost like Banjo Kazooie if they had moved the platform zones faaaar apart and dumped the jump button. I've put all day into the game and haven't even seen what the new Ganon looks like.. it's like there is no evil force pulling the story. In OOT You knew right away who the bad guy was as he rode off with Zelda on a Horse and gave you a "i got your woman" look as he rode by.. In Wind Waker you don't get any of that.. it's your sister (no "love" drama there) AND your first "zone" is right out of Sly Cooper.

I'm only just out of the forsaken fortress for the first time, so you can read ahead if you're further than me, but, for hyper-sensitive people...
*SPOILER WARNING - wherein I will reveal things from the games intro*
What the FUCK is up with the storyline for this game? Is this kid supposed to be different from the "Link" in all the other games? They act like the events of Ocarina of Time took place several centuries ago, and WW Link doesn't even recognize Ganon (I did, right from the beard). What the HELL is GOING ON IN LoZ STORYLINE?! I mean, it was messed up before (continuity conflicts between Link to the Past and Ocarina), but now...damn.....it hurts to think about it.

Oh and so far, no Zelda.. Why call it Zelda? why not call it "The Legend of Aryll: that blond kids sister"
I understand it's in the same universe but there apparently is over 1000 years in between this and OOT but the back story leaves everything out. They need to start calling it, "The legend of Hyrule."

Whre did you see this? On the startup screen where you choose your game? I don't think it's a measure of how many man hours you put into it: It looks more like it's the time it was saved. Just stopped playing a few minutes ago and it was 04:27, and that's about what time it was. :-)

My friend brought over his copy of WW that he picked up yesterday, we played for awile, it seems to be a great game, now I wish I would not have sold my Gamecube, I have enough cash to get the game, it's just, dropping $50 on a game is hard for me to do IT HAS TO BE A MASTERPIECE for me to pay that much.

If you want to know... highlight... not really spoilerish, but thought I'd make sure just in case (cos like people have already posted SOME!
It's never the same Link and Zelda in the games. However Ganon is always the same. OoT and Majora's Mask take place 100 years before Wind Waker. But WW is timeline wise before LttP. My question is... how does Hyrule unflood itself in time for this adventure? I hope we find out. Also, once you complete the game you can also understand my wondering how the Master Sword teleports itself to a forest in LttP ;)

I too made it to the forsaken fortress before the baby started crying (she's got a few teeth coming in) I'm hoping to spend some more time with it tonight. On a side note, when I picked up my game last night at Babbages, all the sales people were dressed like Link complete with the hat. I'll see if I can get a couple pics of them.

You know, the most messed up thing about the Zelda:WW story is that at some time after MM, Gannon escaped and no warrior in green defeated him.. he just rocked Hyrule.

Actually, I've heard that in the japanese timeline, Lttp is the last game in the series...I dunno how much truth there is to that. It really doesn't even matter.
I'm gonna guess that maybe the temple of time came down and woods grew around the sword? I haven't gotten very far into wind waker so I'm ready for that theory to get blown up ;p

to those confused at the plot:
watch the intro movie again- it's there....didn't you read those old dc comics when they'd put batman or superman in these alternate universe plots, and you had to maybe roll your eyes at some stuff, but 32 pages or so later, you were all excited? consider this a zelda annual or something. lighten up, dudes!... :D
also, the "zelda" name stays because of trademark reasons, and some consumers out there know the series as "zelda" (even calling link by that name x_x ), so any changes would most likely cause some confusion in the marketplace. of course, i'm all for people educating themselves and dealing with name changes. personally, i'd prefer "link's adventure: the windwaker" or something like that... :D

Who gives a crap about the story. I'm just happy moving a little green guy around w/ a sword and exploring some world and checking out some dungeons! I can't understand why people place so much emphasis on the "story" for a zelda game.. when we all know it's just some loosely put together crapola in order to do some action/adventure gaming. :P

I never understood why the series is called "The Legend of Zelda." Apparantly, the only thing she knows how to do is get kidnapped. Of course, Zelda is disguised during Ocarina of Time, so maybe Nintendo would give her a game of her own one day. It would be a great way to get more games out without being stuck to the official series.
Coincidentally, my classics review this week is Zelda 3 on the SNES (check my website). I've been playing through it, and having a blast. If I don't have a Gamecube, I'll have the next best thing.

Anyone else using the GBA link to call Tingle? I was thinking I wouldn't be able to bomb a certain area until later in the game then I realized that the manual said using the GBA you could! So I checked it out and it's pretty nifty. It tells you what the enemies names are too (something you'd never know by playing the game regularly). It's supposed to be used for a 2nd player to guide you along.. but i just use it myself as an occasional check for secrets/goodies, and of course to bomb areas :P

You get bombs fairly early in the game btw.. If you've saved Tingle already and you don't have Bombs then you are probably in the Forest.

Well I wasn't in the forest when I wrote that. (I was in the merchants Island). But NOW I'm in the forest and still don't have bombs. Where did you get them?
