I was wondering which version you guys thought was better and why. SNES or Genesis? Also what about part 2? I never played the Saturn Special Edition version. Is it far better than both or not really?? Let me know what you think. Thanks!

I believe the genesis was better. The snes I believe was a port but the original was better. I loved the saturn version it has a nice score and controls.

The genesis version. I have the first on genny and the second on my snes. The colors seem more natual on the genesis -- prob cause the snes was a port.

Snes by far...I esp love Earthworm Jim 2 the best though

Vote for Genesis. My big beef for the SNES version was that one underwater level, with the bubble ship. I submit the timer on the SNES version was too short, because I never passed it on the SNES, but never failed it on the Genesis version. :)

Wasn't there also a special edition for the Sega CD?

I never heard of the Saturn special edition. I'm guessing it's the equivalent of the Windows 95 special edition, with both increased color depth and CD audio tracks.

I have the Earthworm special edition, and I love it. Not much different but it has an additional weapon, level, more animation. I never finished it, but I agree with the others and say that the Sega one is better. The Sega CD one has initial load time, but it is still my favorite.

Both EWJ one and two are better on the Genesis. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned yet on EWJ1, the Genesis version has a level (Intestinal Distress) that isn't on the SNES one at all.

However, the Special Editions are the best, if you have the systems to play them on. EWJ1:SE was on Sega CD and EWJ2:SE was on the Saturn. They have more levels, better music, passwords, etc.

And Windows 95!

Looks like I will most likely going this route. Will probably get both genny and snes versions eventually but probably be getting the sega cd ver of 1 and the saturn ver of 2. Thanks for your help guys, keep the info coming.

I've owned the SNES one for the longest time and became more familiar with it, but after recently playing the Genesis version, I think I might give my slight edge to the Genny. Although technically inferior, the graphics and sound just somehow fit better. Plus, the Genny has the real awesome and creepy level where you're inside a maze of gigantic intestines. For some reason, it was left out of the SNES version, and that's something that I'll never be able to figure out.

So, between the two, I advise the Genesis version. However, the Windows Special Edition (which somehow popped up in the collection of PC discs that I rarely check out anymore) has everything the Genesis version has and then some. Whichever one you get, EWJ is an awesome game that's been a favorite of mine for ages. What other title allows you to commandeer a giant hamster of death or have a bungee-jumping battle over a sea of snot? :D

Between the SNES and Genesis versions, Genesis is by far better. The SNES version has a load of weird differences that don't make sense, like the missing intenstines level mentioned, some strange music changes, changed colour palettes, completely different (and lamer) sound effects used throughout, and even some barely noticable animation cuts (the snot platforms at the end of the game don't move at all, they do on Genesis)

If I remember rightly, the only (sort-of) positive change between the SNES and Genesis versions is that, in the mid-level interludes, you can press any of the buttons to make Jim say 'Groovy!' over and over again. Not in the Genesis version, you can't.

Obviously, the Special Edition trumps both of them, although the extra level (Big Bruty) isn't much fun, and there's load times (at least, on the Sega CD version)

I was unaware it was released on the Genny. Man I feel stupid.

I tried out the Genesis version last night, and damn, it IS better than the SNES version. Well, the SNES one has better sounding music, but it's still a lot more fun in the Genesis. It also feels a bit... faster.

After playing both I'll stick with the Genesis version. Like what most have said, everything just fits the setting as a Genny game. The same way I could not play Mario on any other system but Nintendo or Halo on a XBox and so on...

And the Game Gear, B&W Game Boy, and GBA, too. (Word is that the GBA ports suffered from a sickening lack of testing, though.)

don't forget the NES! of course it's a hack, but it's playable, afaik.

I think I am the only defender of the SNES version haha. And the intestine level you are referring to is called "The Villi People," wasn't that on the SNES version of Earthworm Jim 2 as I recall? If we are talking about the same level.

Nah, slightly mixed up. 'The Villi People' was a stage in all versions of Earthworm Jim 2, the one we're talking about is called 'Intestinal Distress!'.

If your life is not complete without playing 'Intestinal Distress!' on any Nintendo console, it showed up in the pretty bad EWJ1 port for the GBA (although to be fair, it's playable at least... unlike the port of EWJ2, which was horrendous to the extreme... They even made the Quiz Show unplayable!)
