Back in the day I could, but I doubt I could now. I can still beat Contra without dying though :)

I really can't say for sure that I haven't, but I know I could if I put some time into it. I've certainly beat the game without continuing or the 3-1 trick.

Really, if you warp, you're probably not going to die until 8-2 or so...which only leaves a few levels to perfect AND the last few levels are not really all that difficult if you can hold on to the fireballs to take out the hammer bros. and Bowser. It's one of those games that is almost easier to beat on 1 life than on 3 or 4, because you lose your weapon.

Now if you take out the warps, that's a different story.

I'm sure a lot of people have beat the game without dying because I've done it on a few occasions. No, I didn't use warp zones either because I thought all of the shortcuts and warp zones in the Mario games took away from the fun of playing through the levels. The Mario games are among the greatest games of all time, so what bozo wants to warp through most of the levels in any of them?

I haven't played all the way through SMB in one sitting for quite awhile, so I have no video footage of this. However, beating SMB both without losing a single live or using a warp zones isn't much more difficult than beating Contra or Super C with 3 lives (each of which I've done once or twice), beating the first TMNT game OR getting through Mike Tyson's Punch Out without any passwords. It sure as hell isn't harder than beating the first Ninja Gaiden, regardless of how many continues are involved in THAT process.

I've never considered myself a legendary gamer, just pretty good, so if I've done this feat then a bunch of people have done it.

Did it on the Virtual Console about 2 months ago. That was also the first time I beat Super Mario bros. (sad, I know...but seriously !@#$ world 8).

TOok me two weeks to beat the game when I was 11, and another two weeks to finish it without dying. It's not really that difficult a game once you play through it a gazillion times.

I've done it a few times, and I can't honestly say I remember the first time. I think the farthest I have gone without warping and not dying was level 7-4.

Yeah, when I was little. I used to play through the whole game every morning before I went to school while waiting for the bus. Those days were great.

Maaany years ago, when I was about 8 or 9, I could do SMB without getting hit. I also did SMW on the SuperFami without loosing a life.

Whether I could perform these feats of platform precision nowadays is another matter though...

I also did SMW on the SuperFami without loosing a life.

Including the extra star world levels??? That would be quite impressive!

It's one of the main things he wants to do when he comes here...To go through SMB1 quick without dying or even getting hit.(to show me he can do it)Me=seen you do that already bro, seen that..Ok,go ahead I'll watch you.

He recently did it here using on my Super Joystick TV game..

I can beat it in about 15 mins with warps, but I take my time. The record is like 9 minutes I think for beating SMB1.

With the 4-2 warp zone (I usually skip the 1-2 warp), I can play the game pretty much indefinitely on one life, beating it over and over. Without the 4-2 warp, I probably could beat it on one life, but it would be hard. Pretty much every level of world 7 is a bitch.

It definitelytook me a long time to get good at Super Mario Bros. I didn't have an NES as a kid, but it was one of my favorite games to play when I was at a friends' house who did have one. It must have been at least a couple years after the first time I played it before the first time I got to 8-3, which is something I remember because it was so cool the way the castle started in tha background right away. Me and my friends were like, "What? Is the level over already?" The I got killed by a hammer brother. Again and again, did I get killed by a hammer brother. Those fuckers are still the only enemies in the game that scare me.

Super Mario Bros. is one of my most ofetn played games to this day. I have a special ROM I made for my DS flash cart that collects together all the NES versions of Super Mario Bros. along with the best level and sprite hacks. If you want a challenge, try the Luigi & The Christmas Quest hack. It's a great hack job with all new sprites, palettes, levels and even some changed game mechanics and it's very very hard.

count me as an I did it a few times, but I wouldn't bet the farm I could do it in say 5 minutes from now.

No, I cannot beat SMB1 without dying.

I would say that I have always not been able to beat SMB1 without dying, so it was pretty much instantly. No special training was involved in getting this good.

I've possibly done it before, but I've never been one to focus on getting through a game without dying once. I'm sure I've gotten to world 8 without dying, though, since I used to be able to breeze through the game up to that point. I have no idea how good I'd be at the game these days, but I suspect at this point it's so engraved into my brain that it would be like riding a bike.

I have, however, beat Super Mario 3 at least 40 times in my life.

Yep, all 96 exits without loosing a single life.

And come to think of it, I'm sure I managed Mario64 without loosing a life on the umpteenth play through.

But all of these feats were a long time ago. I'd probably get pissed off with Mario64 now, and end up lobbing the controller at someone/thing.

But how many of you jumped over the end of level flagpole on SMB? I have....

I jumped it...but on an emulator. I saved state right before and kept trying over and over till I got it. Level 3-3.

One day many years ago, I had a supreme itching to play Super Mario Bros. I sat down and finished it without taking any warps. Then I still had it in me, so I finished it again. Then again, with warps. Then again, without warps. I saved the princess seven times in one credit before turning it off. My game was absolutely smokin' that day, and I've never had that magic since. I did die here and there, but I didn't use the 3-1 1up trick because I can never pull it off!

Nowadays I don't really like Super Mario games that much. They're alright, but my cup of tea has changed.

I play through SMB a lot, and I think I might have done it once or twice without warping, though I'm not exactly sure. If so, the first time would probably have been 2-3 years ago.

Yes I can. I can beat it with one life using warps or no warps. I remember the first time I beat the game was because I watched this girl beat it. I couldnt even get halfway through the game at the time but I was damned if that girl was going to make me look bad. LOL

Yes here, in fact, the last time I played SMB1 I beat it 2 and 3/4 times before dying, no warps...the only reason I died was because I got the hiccups, and dropped the controller.

I have also beaten the Lost Levels without dying. Including all the extra post 8 worlds...

I tried last night to finish it without warping, but I was rusty (and sleepy) and got a GAME OVER at 5-4. I tried again this morning and finished it, died twice.

Finished with 648,800. My highest score was 840,000+. Someday I'll kill every enemy and grab every coin for that 999,950.

TMNT didn't have a password system.

All the games you mention, though, I used to be able to beat on one life, including Ninja Gaiden. :D

I think Super Mario Bros. on one life is quite a bit easier than any of those other games you mentioned actually. Easier than most other games out there that I can think of, period. Very little of the enjoyment in SMB comes form the difficulty, instead I think it's the speed at which you can play. Being able to basically just keep your finger on the B button the whole way through the game. Making death-defying leaps across the sky to just miss the jaws of a piranha plant disappearing into a pipe. Stuff like that. That's what I think makes it a great game to this day. Super Mario Bros. still has better and tighter play control than 99.9% of video games. Maybe it's exactly as a result of that that the game is also easier than most, too.

You mean that's really possible without a Game Genie? I never thought it was, I've tried it millions of time and never been able to do it. I've also nevere really been able to do the 1-up trick on the shells in 3-1 either, though. I've managed to bounce on them once or twice a couple times, but never to like max out the lives or anything like that that people do.

I did manage to get the thing where you hit Koopa and the axe at the end of a castle level at the same time and then in the next level you're a small-big Mario or even small-fire Mario. That's prett cool. I did it accidently, too, even though I knew it was possible. It'd have been even cooler if I hadn't already seen the same effect before using a Game Genie. Same would probably go for jumping over the flagpole if I ever manage to do it, I guess. I've done that before using a Game Genie, too. Stupid Game Genies. They really have ruined some things in video games. Nintendo was right to try and keep them away from us afterall! Thank you, Nintendo!

Game Genie ruled. I was one of the first people ever to own one. I remember I wanted one more than anything because it was this mysterious secret weapon no one had. They were illegal in America at the time and I convinced my mom to order me one from Canada for Xmas or a birthday or something. They were the first mass market cheat device and it was so cool to be able to do things in games you weren't supposed to...to finally know the answer to "what would happen if..." in so many games. It let you have a peek at the man behind the curtain, or reach up and touching the sky, or holding the hand of God, or whatever. The thing was magic to me when it came out.

I remember that with shipping, she paid $117 for it. I think the GG was $90 or $100 or something. I think I still have that original one hanging around with the original Galoob logo, not the Camerica one America got(or was it vice versa? I forget).

I got in trouble for opening the FedEx package it came in rather than wait two days until when she was going to give it to me. I knew my mom would be pissed because it was her mail, but I figured it was worth any punishment to give that thing a shot before she got home from work. She was pissed, too...real pissed.

Yep. It only happened the once about 18years ago. I wasn't sure what to do. I didn't wanna jump onto the flag pole, so I just kept running. And the castle wall just kept going, and going for about 10mins. All I could do was reset the machine.

I've never found anyone else that's managed it either. But take my word for it, it really is possible.

Yup!
As a matter of fact, I have one of the fastest times in the world for beating the game! My fastest time that I have on film is 5:28, the world record being 5:10.
I literally lost 10 seconds on those damn hammer brothers on the second last level. I just had to stand there and wait for them to jump into the proper levels of the brick. Oh how I hate those hammer borthers.
