Seen a lot of those on other similar lists but I have to agree with #1...it's so horrible and the sad thing is that the game is so good.:(

When ever they make these lists they should just put the entire SMS library down under one number.

Yeah, they pretty much all sucked.

I don't see why ironsword is on there just because of fabio! He does take away from it but not much he was like todays Arnold

Hmm, an earlier list had Ninja Golf in #1... obviously going for 'bad' rather than 'so bad they're good', which actually makes a lot more sense when you think about it.

This quote from the page is classic:

"It's pretty obvious that the guy who designed the Megaman cover had never even played the game. Megaman is not some senior citizen with a yellow t-shirt." LOL!

I always thought the Fabio one was not bad at all.

This list seems a little better than the other one.

I'm not sure what the game is but #8 is horrible

A good list, but there are a few things I never get with these things:

1) Why does anyone always rag on Phalanx? I always thought that was a great cover, it's certainly bizarre, but you can't deny that it grabbed (or would have) grabbed ones attention back in the heyday of the SNES. The cover makes what would otherwise be a me-too game quite memorable.

2) Sega was obviously going for a theme with the SMS boxart early on. Yes, the foot does look rather strange, but it and all the other early SMS boxes are striking in my opinion. They're all so minimalist, and it adds to the charm of the system.

#14 The title that they chose not to use for this game was “Freddie Mercury Goes Nuts!”

LOL

That Donkey Kong cover is kinda interesting...trippy and surreal.

Ditto. Hell, if I had Fabio's looks... Well, let's just leave it at that before I get depressed about the situation.

And Ninja Golf? I didn't even know that existed. I laughed so hard, I think I want that title. I don't even own a 7800.

Yup, some of those were new to me. The NCAA March Madness guy would look at home in Tetes a Claques .

For those of you intrigued by Ninja Golf, there's a reasonably diverting Flash "homage" to it out there.

They're all so minimalist, and it adds to the charm of the system.

Hah, "charm".

Yeah, they pretty much all sucked.

There were some okay ones. Spellcaster would have had a brilliant cover if the backdrop was black instead of the traditional SMS white-checkerboard BS. Zillion's cover art is actually really well done! The computer terminal represents a major part of the game, and the flat shapes complement blue gridlines in the rediculously overused SMS backdrop. Phantasy Star and Y's Book of Vanished Omens look pretty cool as well.

The Euro ones from 89/90 onward are a vast improvement over the early ones.

What's wrong with the Power Instinct cover?

I will admit to Zillion having a better cover than other SMS games, but still I think it's pretty weak. Doesn't make a ton of sense to design almost a whole library of games by doing clipart in the bottom left corner of each of them.

I still think the blue-on-white gridlines are evocative of graph paper and math homework more than anything else.

I've come to the conclusion thatthe entire interwebz is wrong about the Mega Man cover. If you only etched in a more cartoony face onto him and fixed his arm into a gun, the cover would be awesome. Look at the background! That's pretty cool, if you ask me. It's got that futuristic look to it that captures the original MM feel.

The Megaman cover isn't so bad if you just make a few small changes.

Oh that Fabio, he never ceases to amaze me.

I always found the SMS covers to be very interesting, as in what the hell were they thinking.

Hmmm no Turbo Grafx 16 covers? Any "worst covers" list has no cred without Turbo box art.

Turbo Grafx box art = ROFL ROFL

I think you should build a time machine, travel to the early 1980's, get yourself a career in cover art making, and shower the world with Fabio cover art!

you no-nothings dare insult the simple SMS covers!!! In my opinion they are some of the coolest covers ever. Sure the foot one is pretty rank but most of the simple covers are better then the later more illustrated ones. I mean how awesome is the cover of wonderboy that hammer and snail is classic. CLASSIC I SAYS!!! It is super collectable if in mint condition just looks simple, flawless and ultra retro. None better dare insult the sega card covers!!

Hey, man, I'm with you for the most part. The simpler covers tend to look iconic--like Zillion or Fantasy Zone...their meaning is almost esoteric; you have to have played the game to understand what they represent. This is both good and bad for marketing--some people won't understand what the game is about and pass up on it immediately. Others will be so curious they'll play it just to investigate (like me.) However, some were just plain bad. Alex Kidd in Miracle world was a bit off, along with My Hero.
