This has been brought up several times and the general consensus is that porn doesn't matter all that much now and isn't going to have any significant effect on the format war. Y'see, since the Beta/VHS battle, a little thing came along that quite revolutionized the way people access porn, and you and I are both using it to type messages back and forth to each other.
Besides that, who needs a high-def ass-zit, or a crystal-clear shot of some dude's teste-satchel?

I've heard that most porn companies are generally boycotting HD altogether because you can see the stars' imperfections. I know I've turned off many a porn due to disgusting ass-pimples.

I think it will have an impact, but not as large as some people are led to believe

Ye, today the internet is a huge portal to spread porn. I think it will have a impact of course, millions (copies that is) of XXX movies are sold every year so it is a big business.
Besides that, who needs a high-def ass-zit, or a crystal-clear shot of some dude's teste-satchel?
Haha LOL

They just needed to train their makeup artists for both ends of their job.

That's hilarious! Too bad a lot of times their faces look like crap too. I was watching this Italian flick one time and the chick was so gross I literally pulled back from the screen. Why the hell would you do a close-up shot on a haggard looking 35 year old tramp?
Hm, why does people constantly forget that the amount of porn DVDs on the market still is really big?
Sure, not like VHS/Betamax, but i'm certain that the porn industry could make some difference.
And the whole thing with porn companies giving up HD... Seriously, do you believe it yourself?
If people want HD porn (which people wants?), the companies WILL make HD video. Sure, i bet that the DVD will still reign for many years to go (Just look att how long it took for porn DVDs), but there's no way that many people won't be watching anything but HD porn in 2012.

Personally, I think that HD is irrelavant. Look at how many people are willing to watch shows on a tiny youtube screen, and you will see why. Ultimately, people are willing to watch content in the cheapest and easiest to access form, and HD is anything but easy.

Easy access form is indeed a big factor, but a even bigger factor is that its free. Its not like people prefer crappy quality, but they accept it since its free and easy accesable.
How is HD not easy? Pop the disc in, press play and watch. Not any harder than a normal DVD or VCD. When it comes to streaming it exactly as easy (or hard, what you prefer to use) as any other streaming. Only thing different is that it takes longer time since its more data to stream.

It is not easy in the sense that there are several different resolutions for HD (1080i, 1080p, 720p, etc), you need special cables to get HD, and there is a lot of tech specs thrown around. Really, to the average consumer that just wants a clear picture, it is very confusing.

It took several hours of searching and researching to feel confident enough to actually make an HD purchase. It's very confusing if you;ve never been exposed to it.

It might look like much, but its only as confusing as you make it yourself. There is alot of easy explained info on the net so with alittle effort you can easaly find out whats what. I can explain these things in 5 minutes to a total noob and make him/her understand it.

What did you research, why did you do it and what conclusion did you came to?

I think we have a slight difference in what we consider as the average customer or noob. You won't be able to explain it in 5 minutes to the average customer because he/she doesn't want to hear any of it. The average customer wants to watch "the HD picture", not to hear the technology behind it.

A total noob is a person who dont know anything about the subject. If you say that the average customer is totaly green on the subject, then you mean that this person is a total noob.
The reason why you would explain the meaning of 720p, 1080i, 1080p etc. etc. is to make the person understand what the difference is when it comes to picture quality. If the person have no interest in hearing what the differences are, it shows that the person really doesnt care if he/she gets the best picture quality because of the lack of interest. A person thats interested in it would listen to whats being said.
As said earlier, you only make it as confusing as you want yourself. If a person is confused about it, but at the same time dont care at all about learning about the stuff, it means that this person wants to stay confused. Simple as that.

There are a lot of analogies being made between the HD DVD/Blu Ray and the 80s Beta/VHS war. This time however, I think if the porn industry adopts one standard and lets say a major movie studio adopts the other, there is still room for both. Crucially because, both of the current next gen DVD standards are the same in physical dimension, and there are already players that play both HD & BR DVD. Since so much money and time has been invested by both sides, I think that in the future you might see the front of DVD players stamped with both BR and HD DVD logos. Just like today you when you see players covered with DVD, VCD, SVCD, SACD CD/CD-R/RW and JPEG logos.

yeah, its gonna be what happened to DVD-R/+R. both formats are here to stay, and we'll just be seeing dual format players. eventually companies will stop making movies on both formats and just stick to the cheaper one, but in the case of all the movie studios Sony owns, they will only make it on bluray, so yeah...

One thing I will totally agree upon, is the cabling part. I can't even began to tell you how many times I've been over to a friend or family members house, who had some type of HD equipment, but had it hooked up with the old school composite or S-Video cables. It's so freaking depressing. Of course, I helped the person out, and immediately hooked it up the right way, and showed them the red, green and blue component plugs on the back of their TV's, and that those are the plugs to choose when hooking up High Def stuff. I'm talking about people who had High Def TV tuner boxes from Comcast or High Def satellite boxes from Direct TV or Xbox 360's or whatever. Tons of stuff that isn't hooked up with the right cable. Then they wonder why their HDTV looks nothing like it looked at the store when they bought it.

For a minute, let's ignore all the specifics on how unaccessible HD/BR is to the average consumer, and let's forget about the differences between the Beta/VHS war and the current battle.
Look at it this way: who really has the time or motivation to blow all the cash and put in the effort to purchasing and installing a HD system? Methinks it's the same demographic who's interested in porn: single young adult males who spend a lot of time alone in front of the TV.
While porn may not be a huge factor in this HD debate, there probably is a significant amount of money to be made of HD porn, and somebody is gonna capitalize on that at some point.

Speaking as a single young adult male who spends a lot of time alone in front of the TV, I still get my porn free online, much as I imagine anyone else of my knowledge/stature does. That said, there is certainly a demographic, but I doubt it's as big/influential a demographic as was around 20+ years ago.
