Yep, another how the hell do YOU pronounce it?
Final Fantasy, Gil. Don't say how you think it SHOULD be pronounced, but how do YOU pronounce it (presumably in your head). I suppose if you DO go around saying it out loud, you could say how you say it out loud :)

Gil, like the salesman on the Simpsons.

I usually pronounce it with a hard G (as in gills). But now that I think about it, given the Japanese language and the fact that the consonant+i sound is usually a long "e" (kee, hee, shee) it's probably pronounced geel (with a hard g). Does anyone have a pic of how its written in Japanese?

Gil, a lot like the shortened name for Gilbert. That's how O'aka the 23rd pronounced it in Final Fantasy X.

I never liked "gil" so I always say "gold" anyway.

Another vote for 'gill'. Just sounds daft otherwise.

Gil as in guild. Or Gillian Seed! or Gilligan.

...Now that I think about it, I guess I could go either way: "Gill" or "Jill". (But definitely not with "ee".)

I seem to recall there is a similar question in regards to chunks of fallen foes in FPS games: "gibs" or "jibs" ?

I always pronounce 'gib' as 'jib' as I always thought it was short for 'giblets' (which you have to admit does kinda make sense). Now I come to think of it, I always justified my pronunciation of 'gil' as it being short for 'gilder'. It's not as if Squaresoft haven't raided other European languages for words before...

Fairly straight forward vote then eh? I always said Gill (fish breathing) as well, but as previously mentioned, it probably WOULD be "gilu" in japan. Anyone know if the almighty O'aka pronounced it like that in the japanese version?

It's pronounced Gil as in "guilty". It's been pronounced this way several times by the American voice actors in FFX and FFXII.

Another vote for the hard G, fish based response.

This thread should have a poll.
