Hi i have a jap megadrive 2 and i recently bought usa contra hardcorps that plays perfectly and usa castlevania bloodlines that freezes on the konami trademark sign:( . I opened it up and cleaned the contacts but with no joy and i have since heard that some late konami games had a region block but seems strange that hardcorps plays so can anyone confirm that it does play on jap machine. --thanks

I got the exact same results when I tested out both games via emulation; I set Kega Fusion's region to Japan, disabled auto detect, loaded the games. Contra worked peachy and Castlevania wouldn't go past the Konami logo.

Yep, time to get the soldering iron out and install English/Japanese and 50/60Hz switches.

I had a few japanese games with region lockout, I did find a sneaky way to get around it.
put contra hardcorps in the system and turn it on, then pull it out and put castlevania in (while the power is on) and hit reset, that usualy gets past the region lockout (your milaage may vary) worked for shining force 2 and a few others for me.
(note I did it on an early model genesis)

Reminds me of those old cheats in Gamepro magizine where you had to put one cart in then pull it out and insert the game you were going to play and there would be some cheat like 99 lives. Gamepro always had a big warning on those swat cheats.

its a pretty harmless trick, the only way you could potentially damage your system is if you turned the power on and off (ie frying) which has very little to do with the trick.
the reason it works so well, is the ram isn't totally flushed when you hit reset hence why those glitches happen with earlier sega games.

I tried the cartridge trick you suggested many times and unfortunatly it didn't work:( . So im going to have to ask who i got it from did it work in the us console and they will probably say yes anyway. Luckily i got both games for the price of 1 anyway but i would really like to know if its bust or has a region block. I think its a region block myself but i dont really know. "Soldering Iron"

Yes, it's a region lock. As I said, get your soldering iron out.

hmm have you tried looking for region lock game genie codes? I know theres some that work on other games, either way it woudln't be too hard for a code monkey to come up with one,

you were told on the second post that its region lock. next time you buy a game, make sure you have the console to play it.

Hey Mario Mania thanks for that it works a treat and to think i thought you were joking. My life feels so much easier now that i dont have to mod my japski MD. What a strange one like holding a button down when you turn the game on
