I have played some really interesting Contra Hacks/pirates for the NES. It may interest some of you. This is a list of the ones I have:
Super Contra 2
Super Contra 3
Super Contra 6
Super Contra 7
Super Contra 8
Super Contra X
Contra '93
Contra 1993
93Contra
Contra Fighter
Super Contra 2 is a hack of Contra NES. It has modified levels and it is SO HARD. It actually has a match-up to Contra: Hard Corps, only this one is known for being hard level-design wise. There are plenty of tricks and Traps here and there. Every single levels was modified and the bosses themselves are quite harder, too. This game is quite similar to the 1993 Contra hacks and variants. Interestingly, there also seems to be a Super Contra 2 for NES which is a port of Hard Corps. I don't have that one, but would have liked it.
Super Contra 3 is, well, a port of Contra 3 (SNES) to NES. This one is pretty cool, too. It has things that the GB version doesn't have and some things the GBA version doesn't have. The music is similar to the SNES version, but sounds a lot more ambient, though some people will think it's crap. I personally like the ambiency.
Super Contra 6 is just a character and title screen hack of Contra Force. Despite this, it is pretty funny. They have the characters: Rambo (yeah!), Ryu (Street Fighter), Guile (Street Fighter) and Bill (quite possibly the main character of the official Contra series). Rambo has the graphics of Bill from NES Contra (but he has a second leg showing on the other side of him) and he goes on one knee rather than on his belly. Guile has Lance's graphics from the NES Contra, with an added leg on the other side. By the way, the extra leg graphic is actually that of a character from the original Contra Force. But they put some effort in recoloring the leg area to match the pants lol. Ryu doesn't seem to be changed at all and he has Iron's graphics.(maybe some blue spots on his arm). Now Bill is actually unique: Despite not using the original Bill graphics, he behaves similarly. When not moving, he is on one knee. If you duck, he is on his belly. You also seem to start with some extra lives. Rambo replaces Burns, Guile-Smith, Ryu-Iron, Bill-Beans.
Super Contra 7 is a special mix of various graphics but resembles Super C more. Some of you may know of it already, though it is true that the levels are annoyingly hard. It does have new levels, but only 5. Still, they are worth the completing. The spread gun and laser gun have their sounds swapped. Plus, the laser is the best gun in this game's case. And the spread is the worst. I think they intentionally swapped the gun sounds to hint at the Laser is best choice of weaponry. Play the game to find out what I mean.
Super Contra 8 is just a title change of Super Contra 7, that's all.
Contra '93 is a slightly modified version of Super Contra 2, though I still haven't found these tiny changes. But truly, this was the original version: Super Contra 2, Contra 1993 and 93Contra came in later.
Contra 1993, the same thing: a slight variant of the Super Contra 2. And I haven't found a difference.
93Contra is another variant. I found one slight difference. It is: In level 3, there's a gap where those two flames on the ground are, so it's harder.
Super Contra X I believe is a pirate original, though it is based off Contra, (so is that not original?). If you really want to know how special and original and weird this thing is, play for yourself! It is emulated, so yay. It has very bad control and the jumping is very sucky. It may also have some collision detection problems.
Contra Fighter is just a GI Joe (NES) hack with some characters from the Street Fighter 2 game.
What do you guys think?
