Been out of it for quite some time. With the recent price drop on the PSP, I am thinking about getting it again. When I last had the unit, I got ahold of a v1.52 firmware (I believe) and was able to downgrade using the tiff exploit to v1.50 to run homebrew. At that time, the only thing people with later firmware revisions could do it to use some GTA hack to run homebrew, and not everything worked.

So, is that fixed now? Can you downgrade any firmware nowadays? Do you even need to downgrade the firmware to v1.50 to run homebrew? Basically, I need to know if I pick up a brand new unit right now if I will be able to get it to run all homebrew regardless of firmware. Any help is appreciated!

You can only downgrade with firmware 3.03 or lower. Update to 3.10 OE-A' and you'll have a better time. It combines the homebrew features of 1.50 with the new features of 3.10.

A new unit will probably have some sort of firmware that is not downgradable.

I just bought a new PSP from GS about 2 weeks ago. Just last week, RyanMurf helped me with getting a custom firmware on it. Check out the thread in Modern Gaming called PSP Hacks_Mods_Ideas??? and you'll see where he helped me with this.

Mine was firmware 2.7 out of the box I believe and after an update to play a game I was at 2.82. I first upgraded to 3.03, then downgraded with the grand theft auto exploit to 1.5 and then used Dark Alex's custom firmware to 3.03 OE-C. It's great since now i can play games from the store and also play with homebrew games, many of which are top notch. As I understand it from RyanMurf, you can only do this if the new unit is at 3.03 or less firmware.

Anyway, my new one WAS below this for what it's worth.

i don't mean to high-jack the forum, but I have a question. At a local gamestore they have two psps for sale. one is version 2.71 and the other is 2.60. The owner is telling me that you can't downgrade these versions, but I think he's mistaken. Is he right or am I right?

Yup, you can downgrade either one of those as far as I know. As RyanMurf on these boards about it. See the thread I cited above.
