http://www.joystiq.com/2007/04/09/gamestop-spoils-twilight-princess-ending-in-stores/

We're not really sure why, but Gamestop is desperate for you to finish Twilight Princess. First, it was begging you to hurry up and finish it so you can return it and now they've decided to cut to the chase and start showing the ending to the game in stores.

We haven't seen it for ourselves, but a few employees of the of Gamestop/EB Games family have clued us in that the last 10 minutes or so of the game is on display on their in-store TV network. We can't reveal exactly what's shown without being spoilicious ourselves so, suffice it to say ... it's everything.

Wait, it gets better. The original complainant on the GameFAQs message board says he got the impression that this was going to be a new monthly feature. Some of you may have a problem with it, but think of the convenience! Now you can just go in the Gamestop, put down $5 to pre-order a game, see how it ends and pre-order something else. You could never have to play a game again!

All of Gamestop mangement who are involved in this should get fired. Trying to force gamers to finish games as soon as possible is wrong. The game has been for 6 months. I feel store shouldn't do this to games that still having brand new copies in stores in less a years time.

Everyone knows the basic part of the end of all zelda games in who is the villian, but it is the principle of showing endings of games from this new gaming generation at this time, is what I have a problem with.

There is just no part of this that seems right. I'm trying to think of what benefit a company would have for doing this ... thinking ... thinking ... thinking ... nope I got nothing. Seriously can anyone come up with a valid reason?

It's really simple actually. I'm sure that the normal GS customer won't spend the amount of time required to actually beat a game like this. If they see the ending and don't need to do the work to get it, there's a higher chance they will trade the game in. After all, they already know what's going to happen.

GS buys the game back for cheap, marks it up to their typical used price level, and the money rolls in. Why settle for the few percent they make on a new game sale when they can write their own margin on used....

Yet another example of why GS will never get any more of my gaming dollars.

Ugh, there is a Gamestop 5 minutes from my house. I go there for all my game stuff and I really hope they don't spoil anything I plan on playing. Luckily all the games in my "to play" pile aren't brand new games so I doubt they'll run spoilers for Wild Arms 4 or Shadow Hearts: Covenant.

The Gamestop near where I live just plays The Simpsons and '80s movies on their in-store TV anyway. Last few times I've been to the only other close one there were people playing Guitar Hero on it.

I gather this isn't standard practice?

I think it's stupid and therefore not surprising coming from GameSlop. But even if you saw it, would you really want to trade it in? I never trade anything to them anyway because of their ripoff business policies, but wouldn't most folks still want to play through the game for themselves to see the parts in between? The idiocy of that crappy company never ceases to amaze me.

Not to my knowledge, though I don't go to EB or GS often anymore. Their stores around here usually have a big flat tv behind the counter mounted on the wall with adverts for upcomming releases and what's going on in the gaming world. Most of it is old news or something you just don't care about and expect that if it is standard now (or soon to be) that it'll be put on that jumbo screen.

Even though I haven't traded in a game to EB/Gamestop in a long time, I'm sure not going to be doing it ever again.

Um...pitchforkers and torch wielders, this is nothing new. Channel M has been tossing game endings on that DVD since it was EB Games (I've been with EB since 2002, trust me, I know).

The ending isn't even complete, they chopped the shit out of it to fit into 2 neat little segments.

Secondly, it's been what, over 4 MONTHS since the game came out. Granted, two of my co-workers are pissed because they haven't gotten a chance to play it yet, but there's only so long one can hold out before spoilers come aplenty.

Just do what the rest of us do; tune it out.

And for those who haven't played FF7 yet, Aeris dies. :P

The EB now Gamestop here is so goddamn small that i'm not even in there long enough to notice what they show on their TV sets. It also doesn't help that they have tiny TV's mounted near the ceiling..as long as you don't look up you won't see anything.

Now that they are getting rid of DVD's and I've found "Futurama" for XBox i'll probably be in that place far less.

Enlighten us then if you would, Jason. Besides the obvious reason stated above, why do they do it? My stance is why would a customer want to buy one of their jacked up preowned games after having the ending spoiled in the store?

So hold up, you pay $5 to pre-order the game...and they show you the ending to that game? Wow, and I thought VG retail couldn't get any stupider.

...maybe someone just thought it looked like a cool ending. Maybe they even thought showing off the FMV would entice customers to buy the game not sell it off. Seriously the conspiracy theories flying around in this thread are laughable.

WOW... 4 whole months... a veritable eternity in the gaming world, since all of us eggheads know that if it's been out for 6 months, you'll only find it in the bargain bins or on ebay... but then again if you didn't buy it within the first 6 months of its relase, why would you care about buying it after that?

the mentality of the retail portion of the industry amazes me... what a world we'd live in if these bozos were in charge of the music and movie industries too... everything that was released before CD's and DVD's were invented would never be ported to the new formats... what's the point? it's all old!

you would think they'd realize that a very large segment of their customer base has to save up their allowances for several months just to be able to buy a new game, and they do realize this, but only as it pertains to how they can sucker those poor kids into letting them rip them off... hey no problem, you can get the new game by trading in 5 of your old games for half off the new game, or by trading in 10 of your old games to get the new game free!

yeah, what a great deal... and the next time you see me in the store, you'll be asking me why I didn't bring in the last new game that you sold me to trade in for the latest new game... nevermind that it's only been a week... surely I'm not interested in keeping it and continuing to play it anymore now!

Not everyone has a Wii yet, and not everyone who couldn't get a Wii bought the Gamecube version instead.

Regardless of how long a game has been out, and if it's been edited, this is just a straight out stupid business tactic. Imagine if you went to see a movie for the first time right as hit a discount theater, and someone told you how the movie ended (or the highlights of the final 30 minutes) right before you went in. Or think of the person that sold you the tickets telling you that - yes, spoilers do come in time. But the last place you should expect them is where you get the game.

There's no way to justify this. It's flat out one of the stupidest ideas ever thought up by anyone at GameStop.

Yeah I agree it seems kind of odd they'd choose the ending to show. I mean there are like what.. 30 hours of stuff prior to that point they could have shown in Wii Zelda LOL

To choose footage from the ending itself in that respect seems kind of premeditated :hmm:

I was just thinking that, but if they're showing ten minutes of the ending, it's not exactly hey-look-at-this-game's-cool-FMV advertising anymore.

In other news, the Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix trailer spoils the end of Kingdom Hearts Chain of Memories. Sorta.

Whats the big deal? The GS employees aren't going to tie anyone up and force them to watch the entire ending. If people don't want to see it, they can easily look away.

Around here, they don't even have instore tv's unless you include the ones in the demo kiosks for the PS3/360/Wii demo units.

Bear with me here, not defending, just bringing a different angle to it since I'm the one listening to it 8 hours a day everyday.

There's no way to justify this. It's flat out one of the stupidest ideas ever thought up by anyone at GameStop

Here's the hitch; I don't think anyone at GameStop had a real say in it. Aside from showing the reviews, interviews, and what games to pre-order, I think the rest of the videos, both musical and game endings and features are all Channel M. Take the very DVD we're discussing right now. There's a 6 minute segment on Sundance Festival. Now make it an article on Sundance Festival where all you get are about 42 actors comments on a movie / situation that is never revealed to you what is their talking about. Makes just as much sense as showing a game ending.

Also, when I used to work at the mall, I'd go into Aladdin's Castle and see almost the same footage on their Channel M shit, just different announcers and more emo music videos.

but then again if you didn't buy it within the first 6 months of its relase, why would you care about buying it after that?

You missed the point completely. But I digress.

yeah, what a great deal... and the next time you see me in the store, you'll be asking me why I didn't bring in the last new game that you sold me to trade in for the latest new game...

Actually, I'd say what I say to everyone: "Hey guys! (Pause) Did you need help with anything?"

Enlighten us then if you would, Jason. why do they do it?

Seeing how I am not in their Texas office nor on Game Stop's corporate brain trust salary, nor an employee of Channel M I couldn't tell you.

My stance is why would a customer want to buy one of their jacked up preowned games after having the ending spoiled in the store?

Uh...there's no one forcing you to watch it, and seeing how NO ONE IN THE GAME SPEAKS ENGLISH...you wouldn't be able to tell what was going on in the game unless you were actually watching the screen.

I'm not sure what you mean by "jacked-up"? Crappy condition used game? Uh, don't buy it. Price isn't right just yet, Uh, don't buy it. No one is holding a gun to your head.

I usually don't buy games until their $20 and under and I can find a nice copy. Sadly not everyone are collectors like us and the common person doesn't keep a game in pristine, nice condition. I'm still surprised to see DS games come in with their cases, truth be told.

hey no problem, you can get the new game by trading in 5 of your old games for half off the new game, or by trading in 10 of your old games to get the new game free!

No problem, it's called free will. No one HAS to do it, it's their choice. No one is forcing them into it. I has a person who traded in 12 PS2 sports games (all 2002/3ish) for like $8 cash, simply because he'd rather have the money. Did I force him, no? I even asked if he really wanted to do it. Don't go blaming store employees for customer's self made choices.

Also, last I checked, they had a special on PS3 / Wii where you only need 2 games to get a new one :P

WOW... 4 whole months... a veritable eternity in the gaming world, since all of us eggheads know that if it's been out for 6 months

I apologize for rounding down on time. Had I know you were taking this personally I would have gotten exact date and hour for you.

Actually, half a year IS an eternity in the gaming world. If I had a quarter for every person that came in and cringed at a 1 week / 1 month / delay or constantly unknown release date (I'm looking at you Halo 3) I could have funded my own game. Heck, there's no real releases for 360 coming till May, and I have the same few guys come in every other day asking what new releases are in for it.

All this from a game ending, hoo boy.
