View Full Version : How do you currently get your Genesis fix?

Tell us what you picked, and why, and if you want to, how you acquired what you're using.

As most of us know, Sega released three models of the Genesis. Along with that, there's the Sega CDX and the JVC X'Eye. And then of course, there's emulation.

And then there's the Sega Genesis Collection on the PS2 and PSP and the Sega Genesis plug and play units. While you can only play a small number of games on these two, I assume it provides enough of a Genesis fix for some people.

Here's my answer: In April 2004, I purchased a model 2 Genesis and some games from a local DP'er. I picked the model 2 because both my cousin and younger brother use to own Genesis systems and both had the model 2. I also use emulation to try out games I may be interested in purchasing later on, and I'll probably buy the PS2 version of the Sega Genesis Collection when it gets a little cheaper for the Phantasy Star games.

So, what about you?

(I forgot to enable the poll so people could vote for more than one thing like on the NES poll. Sorry about that.)

A model one for cartridges. Had it since launch according to my mom.

and my friends model 2*gawd i hate how it looks. and the buttons are akward to me* plus model 2 Sega CD for my CD fix. I'd really prefer to have a model one Sega CD too. but i can't complain. at least i'm playing

I've got a LaserActive with a Sega module that I use to play on. Haven't touched it in a while though since I bought a Modded Xbox and loaded it with full rom sets from every region.

Although I have all three Genesis models. I use my model 3 to play as of now until I can fix or get fixed my other models. Would love to have all three models functioning. SEGA!!!!!!!!\\^_^/

Due to a lack of space around my T.V. I use emulation. because i usually only play for 30 min at a time it is faster to use the computer. although I do love my genny one and my sega cd 2 they look great together

When I get a wild hair I play it on my mod 3. I still hate Genesis though so I dont play it more then an hour or two every 18 months.

Model 2 Genny

I try out games via emulation and if I like them I find copies to add to my collection.

I also use a "modded" Power Base Converter with my Model 2 to play Master System games.

model 2 currently since a model 1 and sega cd 2 together is too wide for my shelf

Cool to see people using LaserActives. But what about people using Wondermegas, Multimegas [CD-X] or even Aiwa CSD-GM1s? Come on with the obscure MD variant love.....

JVC X'Eye with USA/JPN region mod for the cartridge side. (may have heard something about this, I wrote the mod tutorial ;)) Doesn't get much better for Genesis / Mega Drive gaming - especially since my JVC X'Eye cost me a whopping $2.

I do end up playing a lot of Model 1 and Model 2 systems though, but it's usually just for modification testing as the USA/JPN mods for these systems are some of my most popular requests.

Most of the time I play on the model 2, but the way my TV setup is, it can be a bitch getting the RF switch hooked up. Really need to get some A/V cables. If I just don't feel like going through the hassle, I'll go the emulation route.

I don't have any room to put the Genesis near the TV, not to mention the fact that I really don't want to sit close to the TV thanks to the short controller cords.

I do my Genesis gaming via emulation on the PSP currently. If I'm feeling squirrely, I'll hook it up to play Gunstar Heroes, but that's really about it.

I wish my brother in law would sell me his laseractive, but I've been trying that since I found out he had one and it hasn't worked yet

Had a model 2 Mega Drive and Mega CD hooked up until recently, had to shift it to make way for the PS2 though. :-( Surprised no one's answered 'Nomad' yet though, that still gets a run-out whenever I'm in desperate need of a fix. :) And can be arsed to find the ac adaptor and step-down transformer...

I'm to lazy to rig up my Genesis 1, my Genesis 2/CD only has an RF adapter so it looks like shit, and I really don't like the joysticks that are available for the Genesis so I'm using a modded Xbox and emulating it. I'm also getting interested in the Japanese games, but I'm not quite interested enough (and too lazy at the moment) to get modding/importing Megadrive stuff.

So I'll be using t3h r0mZ until I get tired of that cheap emulation feeling, and the "gotta play real hardware" bug hits.

Actually I don't do a lot of Genesis at all, really.

I have been using my Nomad that I got for $5, it seems to but out a better picture then a normal Genesis, or that could just be me from not playing in along time till I got the Nomad.

Surprised no one's answered 'Nomad' yet though

Damn, I knew I left something out. That really deserved to be represented with its own choice rather than in the "other" option. Oh well.

I answered other because there was no option for all of them. A more detailed explanation can be found here. (http://30lives.blogspot.com/2007/04/genesis-mess-is-this.html)

Suprise! I picked up a lot with a ton of stuff a while back and it included a nomad w/ power adapter. Since I'm not all that interested in the Genesis it is the only thing I'm keeping to play genny games on. It just makes sense for me because of space issues, and it hooks up to the TV just fine if I don't want to use the itty bitty LCD. The only problem is that two player is a little weird since you have the 2nd controller leading out of the '1st controller' (nomad itself), but that problem rarely comes up.

Okay, I do actually have a Model 2, but it is in my for sale pile and I just haven't moved it out the door yet.

OSG S-Video modified JVC X'Eye.

Why? =)

Import friendly cartridge slot. Single AC adapter but I can play SEGACD and Genesis games easily.

An uber Genesis.

I use a Model 2 Genesis which I acquired from a DP user a little over a year ago. I have a 32X permanently hooked up to it, so my Genesis (and 32X) games go right into the 32X cartridge slot. The 32X came from a thrift store (Goodwill) about 5-6 months ago and it was complete. After I bought that, I attached it to my primary Genesis and haven't removed it since.

I have a second Model 2 Genesis which is permanently attached to a Sega CD which I won off of Ebay. So the one that I use depends on whether I am playing cd or cartridge games. I also have a Model 1 Genesis buried deep inside one of my boxes but I never bother hooking it up.

Genny Model 2 is hooked up to a 26" CRT along with the SMS, DC, SNES, NES, and N64. It's a real nice setup next to my computer. I do emulate on rare occasions but usually to see if a certain game is good if I have second thoughts on it.

I didn't vote since I was unable to select more than 1 answer. I use a Genesis 3, Sonic Mega Collection Plus on the Xbox, Sega Genesis Collection for the PSP and PS2, Sonic Gems Collection on the Game Cube, EA Replay on the PSP, and PC emulation. Depends on the game I want to play and how I want to play it.

Mostly on my Mega Drive II/Mega CD II setup.

The MDII I'm using is actually an Asian PAL unit with the widened cartridge slot so i don't need to use an adapter to play my import games (which have slowly diminshed down to little more than Super Street Fighter II).

Example system:

This thread has guilt-tripped me into looking on ebay and I've found a multimega (PAL CDX) just been put on- he's charging way over the odds for postage, but happily, he lives in my hometown. :D Could be a nice little winner...

I'm currently using a model one, but I'd really like to get a nomad just to have a more "portable" option when the tv's in use.

Sega CDX for me. Given to me by a friend, now valued as a collector's item. Every now and then I'll hook it up to play some Genesis and cd titles. I do have the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 as well, for those games I don't own.

I've got a CDX in need of repair of some sort...aside from the fact the CD motor is weak, I think something has come loose that relates to the power the machine gets. It has a tendency to suddenly cut out and come back at the title screen while you're playing. It's not the power supply, as I've tried several, so my only assumption is that there's a loose connection inside somewhere that needs to be fixed.

And like hell I know how to do it!

My aunt gave me her Genesis 2/32X combo a few months back, but it's not hooked up at the moment(as my a/v selector sucks). Doesn't help me for playing SMS or Sega CD games, though!

Model 2, bought from a co-worker's son + approx dozen games for $30. Also got one from another co-worker at the same time, eBayed that one to ND.

A 3rd co-worker (trust me, telling people you like games pays off!) said HE had one in his garage, but turned out to be just the Model 2 box. I shouldve kept it anyway!

My Genny's getting more use since I bought TeeV Golf from The_Chosen_One here. It's a short, properly weighted club w/ a sensor that you swing over a sensor pad on the floor & works w/ the EA Genesis golf games. It rocks.

Where do I start?

X'Eye - This is my primary system to play Genesis, Mega Drive, and Sega CD. I originally bought this from a guy at work a few years ago for $10. The problem? CD didn't work. Cartridge games worked ok but then I found some info (here at DP) that allowed me to repair the door switch and all was well.

Genesis (model 1/Altered Beast) - My original Genesis. I pretty much have the Power Base Converter on it to play my SMS games. This WAS my primary system until I let my friend adopt my Game Genie and I need to play imports which brought the X'Eye into full time use.

Genesis 3 - This was upstairs in the living room but since it has not been used I unhooked it and am considering selling it.

I use my modded model 2, which is set up with my 32X and model 2 Sega CD. I do wish I still had my launch model 1, since those are just so much sexier.

I also use emulation, but that's for taking screen shots for Sega-16 and for playing fan translations like King Colossus and Monster World IV.

Picked up a LaserActive w/ the Genesis module last year off of craigslist, and have been using it as my primary machine ever since. The wife banished it from the living room however (too big and ugly she says), and so it's now sitting pretty in my 'Room of Doom'. Still haven't played any of the actual Mega-LD games, though.

A Nomad was actually my only Genesis for about three years. Then I got an X'Eye.

Those were "hardcore" enough, but now I've gone all out. I sought out one of the early model 1 units that lacks any lockout. I use that with a 32x (it was a bitch to find that 32x to Genesis 1 adapter) and a Sega CD model 2. And I have this bad boy hooked up in component video, which really looks gorgeous.

I play mine mainly through emulation or Wii's VC.

My (model 1) Genny was stolen in 1995. I've never gotten around to buying another one.

I go with the model 1 Genesis with the Magic Drive Plus. All my games for all my systems are packed up in storage, but I like playing the games on the systems instead of on the computer. When my stuff is all unpacked and set up, as it is once in a while, I use a model 2 Genesis with the model 2 Sega CD add-on and the 32X.

JVC X'Eye & or Model 3...........Nomad-but some games I can't see on the screen.

Well, emulation would have been what I would have chosen a few years ago, but I just do not play these games much anymore if at all. I chose the Genesis Collection (PS2, played on a PS3) because that (and Sonic Mega) are about the only Genesis gameplay I do as of now.

I haven't touched a console game in a while now; been busy with things and playing FPSes in my spare time (those late-era FPSes aren't getting any newer, you know).

EDIT: Other - Mega Jet. Heh, that was almost an accident. When I play domestic games, I use a Genesis 2. Take your pick.

Modded Model 1, same one I've had since circa 1992, though the mod was something I did only a couple years back. I've got a Model 2 SCD but don't bother keeping it hooked up as I only own one game (Sonic CD), and I can play that on my Cube and/or Wii when I feel the need.

You'd better have your best surprised look ready then :)

I play on my Nomad. I don't have anything else to play Genny games on at the moment. Well, not quite true - I have a MD2 Aladdin box set, but it's up for sale. Don't have enough space for anything more than the bare minimum of consoles at the mo.

Oh, heh, I just realized that I *don't* use my Genesis 2 (either one) much. I just hook my Nomad up to my TV - again, when I'm not using a Mega Jet (depends if I have the game as an import or domestic).

well model 1 is a bit misleading, as there's actually two different model 1's... the original version without any lockouts, and the re-chipped version with lockouts... so with that in mind, I play on model 1.5, the lockout version... it sits on top of a model 1 CD and underneath a 32X... I also play on my Nomad

ApolloBoy
04-20-2007, 12:04 AM
I use the model 1, front-loading Sega CD, and (if I feel like it) a 32X. I've also got a Nomad, but I rarely play it because of the terrible battery life.
