(Kinda long post, but bear with me...)

Well it seems the life of my 360 has finaly come to an end, I got it in Nov 2005 so it is long past its warranty period. All of a sudden today while playing Boom Boom Rocket I noticed I was having toruble signing into the game (I owuld press start and it would take me to what appeared to be a profile sign in page for the game), then while I was playing the game my 360 made a static noise and froze with some static like stuff on the screen. I thought it was weird but looked past it.

While playing guitar hero 2 later on (which I JUST got today) it froze two times while playing the same song. After it froze the second time I turned the system back on and it froze at the boot up screen (before dashboard) with small checkerboard pattersn all over the screen and that same static noise. Still no red lights though.

I tried multiple times to reboot it, sometimes it would freeze right off the bat, others it would freeze like 30 seconds to 1minute in.

I unplugged all wires and put them back in, same problem. Here is when I figured out there is no saving the system, when I tried flipping my system verticaly and turned it on, I got the 3 red lights! the screen flicered all weird things like black with blue streaking lines, I turned it off an put it horizontal again and booted it up, no red lights, took me to the dashboard but froze again shortly after, that was the last time I tried.

That broguht me to the conclusion that something is loose inside the system, mostlikely something that was soldered down and came loose (since flipping the system verticaly made it worse)

For easter I unhooked my 360 and broguht it downstairs, and I bet that little bit of movement for the system screwed it up because m 36- had been sitting in the same spot for 2 years and I never had any problems.

Looks like I will be sending it in for repair for $140 overpriced dollars (seriously they know whats wrong, does it really cost $140 so reconnect a loose wire in a system?)

Oh well thats my little story, just seemed weird how it still boots up but doesnt get red lights, just freezes in awkward ways. Anyone else have a similar problem?

(NOTE: I know about the "towel trick" in which you wrap your 360 in a towel and let it overheat, this is said to fix red lights for varied amounts of time, however if MS is sending back your original console now I would rather give them a less baked 360 than what I already g=have [search youtube for "xbox towel" if you are curious on this)

I had the same trouble when I started to play Dead Rising back when it came out. My system hadn't moved at all since I'd bought it, so I don't think it has anything to do with the machine moving locations.

System was dead, replacement or repair needed. MS told me that the problem was 'bad' but didn't elaborate further.

Thank goodness a friend had a Best Buy PRP; I returned it with that and bought a new PRP for $60 with the system and gave the receipt and new guarantee back to my friend. Best Buy doesn't serialize 360's(unlike the PS3), so it's easy to take advantage of that if you know someone who has a PRP you can use.

If you have that Best Buy PRP option open for you, you could wait until the Elite model comes out, and return the machine then. That way, you'd get the Elite machine for the cost of the PRP plus $79(assuming you've got a premium system). I know of a few people who are doing that.

Your 360 does not have a loose wire. It's got a fatal failure. $140 for a replacement 360 is not too bad a deal.

It's too bad it died after only 18 months or so though. I assure you, they won't fix it. They will replace it.

Ah, a launch machine. Mine was, too. I somehow failed to notice that fact on my initial read of your post.

I wonder what, exactly, caused these failures.

Microsoft gave everyone who bought a system at launch or within the first few months a 2 year warranty, instead of the extended 1 year. So you won't have to pay for anything. Have you called up Microsoft yet?

My cousins 360 just bit the dust yesterday. He called MS and they told him the same thing. Send it in with money and theyll fix it. Hes had his since about 3 months after launch. I told him not to send his HD though.

A co-workers 360 just died on him in almost the same way. Pretty odd. He did say however that prior to the 360's death the unit was actually cracking game discs! He assumed this was from some sort of overheating. The cracks would extend from the center of the game disc out. That is just horrible. Not only a dead machine, but a bunch of expensive game titles ruined to boot.

Pete, I bought mine at launch as well and got mine replaced for free just a month or two ago. You may just get it fixed for free.
