View Full Version : Anyone used the Sega Pico with their kids?
Looking for some real-life experience from the DP crowd. We've got a newborn, and I imagine that in a couple of years I'd like to start him on some edutainment software. I've never been particularly impressed by V-Tech or Leapster's offerings, and don't want the trouble of maintaining a separate computer for him yet, but I remember seeing Sega's Pico back in the day and thinking it looked pretty neat.
So, anyone used it firsthand with their children? How's the software? What did your kids think? Any fun-ending pitfalls to the hardware design itself?
Thanks

I'm only 18 and don't have any children, but I have seen kids play with the Pico. I have seen alot of it, and I think it is a pretty nice system for the group it was made for. The "touchpad" control is intuitive for kids to pick up and it works well. I highly suggest busytown and the coloring game as both of them are very good. All of the other games I have seen, I haven't seen much of, but they were good too.
I think the Pico is a much better choice than any other childrens software that has come since its release.
As far as fun ending pitfalls, it can certainly break, usually in regards to the touchpen that is attached by a cord. It probably isn't as sturdy as it should be. There isn't much you can really do since we are talking about young children just playing around.

I think I should know first hand. I'm 16 and was raised with a Pico and NES. I liked it when I was little, alot better than the educational games for the NES. In all I never really played it a lot cause playing Mario and Contra were a lot better. Mine still works till this day but I never beat anything up, just droped my NES down the stairs.
The Pico was OK. You'll have to "read" the personality of your child and see if it fits. My daughter hardly played with the one I picked up for her.

Yes.
..Being that I Day Care I had a couple around here for the kids..this was the main thing they played....They liked it,they liked it a lot..(I did sell them all for the V tech stuff though, they took up to much room)
My Son played with his around age 3-4....at 5 he got tired of it...but if I still had it around he might mess with it now and then...he was pretty excited to play the Pico..
He plays big boy games now-beat the heck out of me in Halo/2
My niece may want to play Pico so I may need to buy one again..

PICO
They broke the pen out of one-and just like regular cart games-the booklets and system have contacts that may need to be cleaned to get it working.
Also,if you get one with no plug the Genesis 3 power supply will work(yellow inner tipped)
