As I've written before, I'm not an RPG player. Aside from Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast, I've never played a modern RPG.

A couple of weeks ago I took a crack at Zelda: Windwaker on the Gamecube. (BTW, thanks Joe, Nate & I are having a blast with this game!) While SOA seemed like a sort-of Choose Your Own Adventure book, but not really having much REAL choice about what happened on-screen, this is a lot more fun, in my opinion.

I'm stuck wandering around, somewhat aimlessly, in the Forsaken Fortress. I don't want any walkthroughs or straightforward answers as to what to do/where to go, but can any of you offer any subtle advice/suggestions as to how to resume forward progress?

I've got a hunch I want to try and get to additional spotlights to shut them down, but haven't found a way to them yet. I also figure it makes sense to try and get to the windowed room high up on the tower with the seagulls, but again, I haven't found my way there yet.

Lastly, is the sword that was lost when I 'entered' the fortress just a tease, or will I at some point find it again?

Thanks.

PS: I tried to search on the keywords Zelda Windwaker, but the first 3 or 4 pages of results were irrelevant to this, so I apologize if this has been covered to death.

Did you find the map? You may have passed it as it can be found rather early on.

Also I assume your using barrels to avoid detection from the spotlights? It's been a while since I've played... if you're way past what I'm talking about let me know and I'll try to help.

Yes - I found the map, and as far as I can tell, I've covered every section/room detailed on the map - only two floors so far, though.

And yeah, I am using the barrels. That was so cute, even my wife chuckled, and she is pretty videogame-averse, unfortunately.

The latest thing I've tried is falling into the water, and then swimming underneath a large door. That led me to some new rooms I hadn't yet seen - I found some flying insects and bats, and had to fend them off.

Also, I tried climbing into the small boat that is in the water, but couldn't get anything to happen boat-related.

I can give more details later, from home. I haven't been able to touch the game for about a week, and my memory isn't reliable.

Have you gotten caught yet? I haven't played the game in ages, but I seem to remember finding some items once I escaped the prison cell...

Just a quick update -

Late last night I found time to return to Zelda, but finally caved in and consulted the internet for answers. For a while I'd been wandering aimlessly, unable to find what to do or where to go next.

There was a room with 2 guards wandering around - I didn't know what to do about that.

There was a hallway with a crate in the middle - I didn't know what to do about that.

Turns out, there was an extra door in the room with the guards - I couldn't see it, because my ElCheapo TV is too dim. Once I read about it online, I knew it was there and could enter the door.

Also, I hadn't yet disabled the last spotlight, because I couldn't figure out how to get to it. The internet gave me that answer as well.

I regret having 'cheated' to get past where I was stuck, but I'm definitely excited again having moved forward, and was losing interest while just wandering around.

Tonight, I'm going to watch Heroes and go to sleep. Tomorrow night, I enter the island to buy a sail!

For me this was by far the most non-fun part of the entire game. Mainly because of that one part where you have NO choice but to sneak past the two patrolling moblins. You really have to pay attention to both of their fields of vision, which a bitch because their patrol paths almost intersect at some point I'm pretty sure. Make the slightest wrong twitch and BOOM! You've gotta make your way up there all over again.

Totally unforgiving. Everything after that is gravy in comparison.

I found it pretty easy there - I just wore a barrel through the room.
