Hmmm...that article didn't site SE or anything. I could believe this, but I'd like to hear it from square enix first.

It appears they are simply continuing to capitalize on the Final Fantasy franchise.

They are porting the games wherever an opportunity for revenue exists.

I don't think this is a surprise, but Sony is not going to be happy. I am disappointed that so many key titles are not exclusive. It's almost coming to the point where it does not matterif you buy a PS3 or a 360 because your going to have the same games.

I think the news that Gears of War may be heading to the PC was a bigger surprise.

Well, there goes one of the few things Sony really had going for them in terms of the PS3. Very interesting indeed.

Now all Microsoft needs is Metal Gear 4..... And to steal God of war 3.

Yep, without Squenix sony is going to be VERY hard pressed to.... whatever... WIN if you wil... I prefer the term winover the japanese audience, but then, IMO, the 360 is doomed from the beginning, the Wii is a different market, which leaves the PS3 to take the japanese market, and my heart.

Really, why does anyone give a flying #@$#@$$#%^ about "Exclusives?" who cares?

Because exclusives are the deal breakers in buying a console for many gamers.

If you want Halo, if you HAVE to buy a 360.
If you want God of War, you HAVE to buy Sony. Etc, etc.

By having the exclusive you want, and then most of the third part games, makes the system purchase that much easier. Not everyone buys every system.

And if FFXIII is really heading to 360, the PS3 just lost a LOT of momentum, since there are already established 360 households that are looking at that as $600 saved.

Yawn. Final Fantasy XI was not exclusive either.

(Yes, that's a different sort of game. But hey, let's not forget FF7 or FF8 either.)

Sorry, should of put it differently, honestly I "get" the whole thing, been following games and the industry since I before the ATARI days, your breakdown though thorough and detailed wasn't really required. I guess for me I am not going to whine and moan because an exclusive title jumps ship off a system I have, I just enjoy what the platform I support has and move on. I just don't see it as a big issue or at least people shouldn't be so damn surprised when a developer flip flops on console exclusivity. I admit I was pissed when I had a PS2 and Capcom released RE4 on Gamecube because I really didn't want a cube but I HAD to play RE4 so I got a cube and RE4 and what happens? It gets released on PS2. At first I was pissed till I realized how good the cube version was and how much fun I had. My point being every platform has good titles, if an exclusive you were looking forward to gets announced for other consoles if it's still on your platform then what does it matter? If it's on another or switched to a platform you don't have then either suck it up or find a way to get that platform or shut up but in todays industry don't expect platform exclusivity promises to mean shit these days....

Well.. Final Fantasy 12 is comming out for the DS too, but its not the same game as FF12 for PS2. Same thing (altho maybe not for DS) will also happend with FF13, ergo, not exclusive. That they talk about the main FF13 game comming to another system is very unlikely in my opinion.

I agree and I think that's exactly what it means

I doubt FFXIII is coming to the 360, it won't I would be amazed if it does

but for an offshoot of FFXIII to come out for the Wii or 360 that's possible, but I mainly see something like that coming out for the DS and/or PSP

Which I believe they won't, not to say it's not possible for MGS 4 substance or something to come out for the 360, but just like FFXIII, I would be shocked if either goes to 360.

Though I would like to see Gears on the PS3 as well.

Certainly makes for an interesting console race. FF was Sony's ace in the hole and if they really have lost it they're going to have to do some major damage control.

See losing FFXIII doesn't just hurt Sony because of lost revenue, but it's jarring enough to make a lot of the more hardcore question why it happened.

The war between the PS3 and the360 is going to be fought on features, price and 1st party titles. Right now MS has the lead in all three in the eyes of most of the community.

Basically the main selling point for the PS3 now is Blu-Ray. Let's face it, god of War is great, but it's not going to sell $600 consoles like FFXIII would. MGS4 still has some power, but it alone may not be enough.

History has shown that whatever system has the main Square / Enix games on it (not crap off-shoots like Gamecube's Crystal Chronicles I'm talkin' the main FF or DW/DQ series) will prosper while the competition will significantly trail behind, regardless of how great of first party titles the competition has.

BUT

Keep in mind that FF isn't the great series and instant hit it used to be, nor is Metal Gear Solid. Dragon Quest is far more influential and popular in Japan and the next one being lost to the DS has really hurt the PS3. Losing FF would be the final nail in PS3's coffin for chances of the #1 spot but most of the damage has been done.

BTW, I have a hard time believing Square Enix is going to support an American-based Console system like 360 unless they have no other choice. It'll be interesting to see how things work out.

If they actually lost it I'd agree with you. But the game *is* still being released on the PS3, so I'm fairly certain they won't have to delve into 'damage control' or anything.

IMO it's foolish to trust a 3rd party for your 'exclusives' anyway - you're far better off creating your own exclusive material. Nintendo lost the FF 'exclusive' license way back in the day but their own games more than make up for any perceived loss by the consumer.

If I'm Square, and I spend millions of dollars on producing FF13, I would want it to be on a console that people, like, own. Like ShenmueFan said, I don't think FF13 is the heavy hitter it used to be, I wouldn't trust it to move a $600.00 box with a bad reputation by itself.

How is the 360/PS3 sales ratio in Japan? Could this move be just to sell more games in the Western market?

According to Media Create (http://www.m-create.com/jpn/s_ranking.html) 360 have sold about 350k since launch. Thats about 14 months ago. PS3 have sold about 830k since launch, about 4 months ago. Putting it on 360 wont really make that much of a difference in Japan. So ye, if it comes out for 360 its most likely to sell more in the western market. PS3 is also about $80 - $100 cheaper in Japan.

I'd be genuinely surprised if this referred to the actual FF13 game itself- it'd have to be a multi-DVD job if it were (based on comments in the latest gamesTM)- I wouldn't be surprised if one of the FF13 spin-offs (versus, maybe? an as-yet-unannounced FF13-based MMO?) were heading to 360, wii, ds, or all 3.
