Hello, I have been getting into PC games lately. I would like some suggestions on some of the really good older pc games I probebly missed. Especially any RPG'S or shooters. It seems like there are no good shooters or traditional snes style rpg games for the PC.
I already know about all the Lucas arts, Sid Meier, and Sierra games. Also really popular games like Doom, X-Com, and myst and stuff like that I already know. So any good PC games you remember let me know so I can check them out.
I just picked up Darwinia on ebay and can't wait to get it.

I mentioned Fallout recently in another thread, just a great game. Others that come to mind in your categories.
System Shock 2 (didn't play the first, but hear good things)
Deus Ex
Heroes Quest -- be sure to start w/ a thief, and remember to 'pick nose'! (sounds like you know of these sierra games)
Half Life
Baldur's Gate (a generally good RPG)
Not quite in those genres, but sort of RPGish is Star Control 2, a game I can always have fun with.
Some of those might be more recent than you are after, but all are a lot of fun. Star Control in particular sucked up a good portion of my life back in Jr. High.
Don't know how "old" you mean, but a few of my favorite 90's PC games that come to mind are:
Rise of the Triad (FPS)
Metal Marines (Windows 3.1 strategy game, may be hard to run these days)
Jazz Jackrabbit (Platformer)
Cannon Fodder (not sure how to classify this one ... maybe squad-based tactical strategy shooter?)
Yoda Stories (silly little Star Wars game, playable in 10-15 minutes)
Battle Chess (just chess, but more satisfying)

I'm not sure what kind of shooter you meant, but "Raptor: Call of the Shadows" is a great vertical shooter with a really fun upgrade system.

Another Good shooter was Chaos Control. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Philips-Chaos-Control/dp/B0002XOXCQ
I also enjoyed Shadow Warrior, and I will second Rise of the Triad. If you can find it, Discworld was great fun.

Stunt Island: (Movie making game with airplanes). Made in the early 90's (by Disney), but STILL fun to play.
The Last Express: Mystery game like the Myst series. The animation reminds me of a European cartoon from the 80's. VERY stylish!!!! Can't remember who made it.
Stunts: Cars + Stunts made by Accolade
Castles: Castle building by Interplay
Shadow Warrior: Like Duke Nukem but with Ninjas and a lot of stupid humor. Fun game though (Played this a lot with my buddies in the college dorm).
Outlaws: FPS by Lucas Arts. Not many people has played this one but in my opinion is the best Lucas Arts game aside from the Tie Fighter series. It's a cowboy FPS with some very nice style. The cutscenes are also top notch.

Cool, i'll check some of those out. Are there any rpg's for the pc that are not strategy type games? Like final fantasy type rpg's or good action rpg like zelda or the wonder boy series?

The original Worms for DOS is the best of the bunch.
Homeworld is an awesome 3D RTS released in '99...reminds me of the new Battlestar Galactica series.
Sam & Max Hit The Road for DOS.

I can not stress the awesomeness of the Baldur's Gates enough. Daggerfall isn't half bad too. Outcast and The Nomad Soul could be worth a look if you're into that sort of thing, they're more action based. Planescape: Torment is pretty damn cool as is Sanitarium. Sure I'll think of a few more later.

Dark Sun: Shattered Lands was and still is one of my favorite PC RPGS. The freedom it gave you was incredible at the time, and there is plenty of loot and questing to do in the game. It is a top down RPG, and you build your 4 person party however you wish. Everything is controlled with the mouse, so get used to having a soda in one hand, and your other on the mouse. I highly recommend it.

Some great games from earlier years: Commander Keen series, Duke Nukem 1 & 2, The Lost Vikings, Black Thorne, Cyberia, Descent 1 & 2, Doom 1 & 2, Heretic, Dune, Total Annihilation, Warcraft 1 & 2, Tetris, Chips Challenge, Pipe Dreams.. List just goes on, here's one picture of PC games I own:

Another great PC Shooter in the vein of Raptor I just found yesterday (but a bit better, as I've discovered) is called Tyrian. It's actually freeware now to boot, to sweeten the deal.

Cyberia? really? I thought that game was kind of painful.

I will agree that Cyberia is, well, not the greatest thing on the planet.
If you want to play the Best Adventure Games Ever (tm) you need only look as far as the Tex Murphy series. Well, actually, it's probably best to play the last three. They're a fun combination of FMV and full 3D environments. Oh, and they're absolutely great in a B-Movie sort of way.

A few I like are:
- Hover! (Included on the Windows 95 CD. Decent capture the flag game)
- Chip's Challenge (Part of Windows Entertainment Pack 3 and Best of Windows Entertainment Pack. Decent puzzle game)
- Challenge of the Ancient Empires (The only educational game woth playing)
- Wolfenstein 3D (Better then Doom IMO)
- Ken's Laberynth (A silly FPS where you go on a mission to rescue your dog from aliens)

for RPG's, the following come to mind:
Darkstone
Hundred Swords
Phantasy Star Universe
Soulbringer
Wizards & Warriors
for SHMUPS, I highly suggest Wingnuts... it's basically an update of Time Pilot
for racing games, there's literally tons... but I recently bought Powerslide and was very surprised that it never ended up on any of the consoles of the time as well... I'd love to see it running on the Saturn... I'm sure that it would rule
I also highly recommend that you check out some of these action games:
Freedom Force
Freedom Force VS the Third Reich
Ghost Master
Hero X
Sanity: Aiken's Artifact

Half Life Death match great VS

Is that the computer/liquor shelf? :)
It was holding some of my drinks because I was moving a few things around cleaning table and shelf space. Those games are still there and a few more but the alcohol is chilling atop my storage dresser next to a TV where my Dreamcast once sat (it's now in an open cart with other systems).
And for some reason, no one has yet to mention a pc must-have: StarCraft.
It's just such an obvious choice I left it alone after listing Warcraft 1 & 2, since that was what got me into RTS games back in 94ish. Starcraft though, I beasted that game out in highschool going 1v7 against other students and stompin their asses. I'd mass defense and they'd max the map with carriers and crap, me having just a few great defending units. They'd be forced to attack full power and they'd almost break a defensive wall but once their units were gone I'd begin massing and just slaughter their dudes because they made little defense. LOL What newbies. On B.net my record was 2k wins and 100 losses, most of which were from BSers and getting stuck with crappy team mates.

rpg: fallout 1, 2. baulders gate, might & magic (5,6), heroes of might and magic (2,3), arcanum, lands of lore (kinda an adventure game..),Ultima 6, 7, 8...

misc: jagged alliance, f22 lightning 2, simon the sorcerer 2, gta1, warcraft 2, command and conquer (original, and the original red alert). grim fandango, blade runner, sim city 2000....
thats all that comes to mind atm. there are dozens dozens more, ill think about it later and let you know, and check my home collection.

I'd say the Delta Force games. Some of the Deer Hunter games are pretty fun, too, but you would want to get one of the sequels because the first game was pretty basic (bare bones). Obviously you can play "updated" versions of Oregon Trail on a PC, not only the original but some of the sequels. Aside from that, you might consider trying some of the eGames packages which contain anywhere between 25-100 games.

The most Japanese RPG I can think of for the older PCs is the tragically underrated Anachronox. Designed by Tom "Commander Keen" Hall, it has a lot going for it, including some truly ingenious writing. Still, it could have used just a little more development. Still, that's closer to FF7 than anything else.
I've been meaning to check out Escape from Hell (http://www.game-over.net/retro/june/hell/hell.html). I've also heard good things about this Neophyte (http://www.interactivitiesink.com/aliensoft/) trilogy. Everyone seems to like Derek Yu's Eternal Daughter (http://www.derekyu.com/games.html), but I suppose that's more of a platformer.
There are lots of fans of something called the Magic Candle trilogy, but I've never played them myself. See also the Ishar trilogy and Darklands.
But finally, my pick is The Spirit Engine (http://tse.natomic.com/), a genuinely challenging and innovative little RPG that has the nerve to do away with so many of the ridiculous conventions that have dogged console RPGs for so long, and is much, much better off for doing so.
Yes, can't go wrong with Star Wars Dark Forces. One of the best Star Wars games ever made, IMHO. Also, if you like adventure games like the Sierra Quest games, try Manhunter New York. Harvester was a great horror game if your into that sort of thing. It was pretty brutal for its time.

Heres a link to the 60 second video which is alot better and a free demo. Someone let me know if it's fun who likes strategy games. I picked the game up for $11 shipped on ebay.
Also I was talking to a friend earlier today and he was saying there is a series of shooters that are free to download but he can't remember the name. He said the series had very well done bullet patterns that were not just random but more like shapes, squares, triangles exc.. He said his friend bought the games from someone in china who made manuals and cases for the games in the series cause they can't be bought in stores. Does anyone have any idea what he is talking about? He also mentioned something about the background of the games being really weird, like it looked tilted. Can't really explain it well. He said it worked well for the games though. I believe he said it was a vertical shooter.

Sounds like Warning Forever (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warning_Forever), or possibly one of the works of ABA games.
Really, everything you need as far as PC shooters goes can be had right there.

Unfortunately, despite how they look, system requirements for those can be a bit hefty. (I remember what fun it was trying to persuade rRootage to run in OpenGL on my Voodoo2.)

Darwinia is a very fun game. But they should've left it as a freebie. The specs are fairly low.
Minimum is 600mhz CPU. 128mb RAM, DX7 capable gfx card

Septerra Core is your FF like RPG, as far as I know was only out on the PC, probably released Windows 95-98ish, maybe get it for $5-10.
Older DOS games if you can get system (or find one to play), would be the Wing Commanders, Wasteland, and the elusive Fountain of Dreams (another EA Wasteland type game).

Just wanted to second (third, ninth, etc.) all the titles mentioned by Apogee / 3D Realms, plus ones not mentioned like Bio-Menace, Blake Stone: Aliens of Gold, Planet Strike, and Alien Carnage. Just about everything that company has put out is amazing and I still play their titles to this day.
Wolfenstien 3D and it's sequel: Spear of Destiny were and still are fun. Heretic: Shadow of the Serpent Riders and the Hexen series are cool.
Redneck Rampage and the Alone in the Dark Trilogy from Interplay are absolutely classic, in my opinion.
Also, seconding Star Wars: Dark Forces, and the Blood series.
One Must Fall 2097 is one of my favorite fighting games ever. I have a soft spot for MegaRace too. And don't forget Quake I & II!
Whew, I can go on and on...lots of great stuff. :)

My recommendations:
- Yogho! Yogho! Spel (a Dutch game which you could get by collecting barcodes of Yogho! Yogho! drink, it's a hilarious game with stupid lyrics (in Dutch) to introduce you to the next level. Although the game has Dutch text, the knowledge of the language is not needed to play and enjoy the game.
- Street Rod (cool racing game where you buy cars and car parts, tune your car and challenge different opponents)
- Commander Keen (especially parts 4, 5, 6 and Dreams)
- Bio Menace
- Duke Nukem (1, 2, 3)
- Scorched Earth
- Epic Pinball
- Silverball
- The Manager (German title: Bundesliga Manager)
- Jazz Jackrabbit
- Supaplex (Boulderdash clone)
- Duck Tales: The Quest for Gold
- Jill of the Jungle
- Alien Carnage
- Sky Roads
- Wacky Wheels (Mario Kart clone)

I would like to recommend some old games but I am not old and can pass for 16 still and even 40.
Still if you mean PC games that is just as fun as console you will need to search far and wide.
PC games is for brainy people or peole who don't really play Video Games. Really Dorky.
A game I reccomend is any Saturn game that was ported to PC like Panzer Dragon.
MDK
FF7
Wing Commnader Prophecy
I forget but there is this SIMS variant where you manage an apartment building.
Even so the games I reccomend is not old. Even Super Muncher and Math Blasters is not old.
The only thing old I can think of
"Gorrilla" a game where you calculate distance to hit your target. Really funny.
And some shooter where you shoot a blue laser over a desert. Really funny.
There was also a couple of early 3d flight simulators. I have a stick where I used it to pull up and navigate.

Nobody has mentioned Deus Ex? That is the greatest RPG/FPS hybrid of all time. System Shock 2, its predecessor, is just as good. And the multiplayer coop of SS2 is awesome.
One other practically unknown gem from the days of DOS is Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye. Very solid Celtic-fantasy strategy / tactics RPG from Koei.

Some of the PC games I really enjoyed in my early years of gaming include (consisnts of rpgs and RTSs):
- Might and Magic 3: Isles of Terra; 4: Clouds of Xeen; 5: Darkside of Xeen; 6: Mandate of heaven; 7: Blood and Honor (1&2 bored me and 8&9 really marked the end of 3DO)
- Heroes of Might and magic II (be sure to get the expansion if you choose this title)
- Warcraft II (great game, I still am playing the 3rd installment which is also great for multi)
- some other games include: Commander Keen, 7th Guest, 11th hour, Roller Coaster Tycoon, Age of Empires II, Majesty.

Nobody has mentioned Deus Ex?
Is a new game and is closer to a point and click game. Most FPS are like that all the time since running around in a atmosphere alone will be kinda boring when you have a character stand alone.
Regaurdless of the RPG universe catergory it might fall in. It is still a FPS.
Imagine all the FPS games you have played in your life and imagine seeing the character run around the place aimlessly 24/7 messing around with objects here and there.

That just reminded me.
DUGEON MASTER for the Atari St.
Also Drakkhen.....Which I accendenttly saved over the last guys party which I killed by walking in the mot with that darn shark:frustrated: Lucky I just walked to the big line in the earth and the four dragons appeared to give me some sorta ending:)
I recently got the SNES version of both games. Personally this is where it all started before the Japanese took over RPG games and everything in the west wented to FPS games.
Dungeon master has to be the the most funniest 3d enviorment you have ever seen. What I like the most is how the game is really 2d but you walk around a super lagged world as if the entire game is desynced.
Then when you start to get to harder enemies you can see them move like fire across the screen where you have to click back back back.
Then you throw items they go distance all the way across the room and stays there. I forget if the item dissappears or stays in place for the entire game.......If it does then look out Resident Evil 0.
Dungeon Master practically is the foundation for all FPS RPG games where it does justic giving you that RPG envoriment and you could care less about ( I CAN'T SEE THE CHARACTERS CHEAP FPS ) .
It is like Akirista's ring but from a First Person view and but is very detailed.

Ah, sweet EGA Trek. Truly a timeless classic, that one. There ought to be a decent homebrew DS version.
A game I reccomend is any Saturn game that was ported to PC like Panzer Dragon.
Clearly you never saw the PC port of Baku Baku Animal.
Even so the games I reccomend is not old. Even Super Muncher and Math Blasters is not old.

Number/Super Munchers is not Old. If it had pong and Game and Watch graphics then I consider it. Pong is not even old that is classic gaming. The first game machine is not even old.

No one mentioned Neverwinter Nights? For $20 US, the Platinum edition includes the original NWN, its two retail expansion packs (Shadows of Undrentide and Hordes of the Underdark) and one premium module made by Bioware, Kingmaker.
It's like Baldur's Gate in that it is an RPG, but more like a hack n slash action RPG than turn-based console RPGs. It uses Dungeons and Dragons rules and your character is very customizable. It also has an online play component, although I dunno how active it still is, now that NWN 2 came out. And you can make your own modules with the Aurora toolset. Basically, if this is your style of games, you get a lot of bang for your bucks (and many hours of gaming ahead).

I also have to recommend games like Dark Forces, Sam & Max Hit The Road, Duke Nukem 3D (try to find the mod for it called The Shining; fantastic mod that puts you in the movie), and Redneck Rampage. Some of my favorites are Carmageddon and FutureCop: LAPD. FutureCop has a great secondary game mode that's a strategy combat game. Seriously addictive.

You just have to check out Doukutsu Monogatari (http://agtp.romhack.net/project.php?id=cavestory) (aka Cave Story) if you haven't already. Quite possibly one of the best freeware games, you'll ever have the pleasure of playing.
I'd also recommened 'Gish' (a platformer fans wet dream) and 'Mount & Blade' (exactly what the title suggests), but they aren't old and require a relatively fast PC (+1GHz).
For some underrated und unkown old classics, you should check out Home of the Underdogs (http://www.the-underdogs.info/), essential site when it comes to abandonware, but sadly isn't updated anymore.
PS: Has anyone mentioned 'X-Com: Enemy Unknown' yet? Awesome game really, but a pain in the ass to get it running, as with most of those old DOS games.

didn't read all the posts, but if you're playing DOS or early win 95 stuff, have to suggest two of the elder scrolls games:
daggerfall
battlespire
any of the first 7 wizardry games
and the always awesome ANVIL OF DAWN (which someone needs to remake one fine day)
cyclones (great FPS with huge levels and a sci-fi theme)
G-Nome
missionforce cyberstorm
chasm: the rift
thunderscape
probably lots more, but it's late and i'm tired...
