Like I’ve said in most of my posts, the Genesis/SNES are equals in my book but when it came to “wow” factor, the SNES blew the Genesis out of the water. Games like Final Fantasy III or Donkey Kong Country weren’t even possible on the Genesis…
Actually, I'm pretty sure games like Landstalker and Shining Force 2 show that FF3-style games would have worked. As for DKC, did you ever play Vectorman?
And in terms of games having that "WOW" factor, did you ever play Thunderforce IV, Mazin Wars, Ranger X or even Sonic 2? Those are games that have made me stare at the TV and go "holy SHIT that was awesome!"

You're wrong. 32,768 colors vs. 512 colors. 128 sprites vs. 64 sprites. 4 scrolling backgrounds vs. 2 scrolling backgrounds. 8 PCM sound channels vs. 6 FM sound channels. Transparency effects, mosaic effects, and Mode 7 3D effects vs. nothing. The SNES hardware was more than just a "bit better" than that of the Genesis.
You are missing a few things. The MD also has 4 PSG channels, 320x240 gameplay resolution, shadow/hilight mode, a 16/32-bit processor with more than twice the clock speed. It isn't limited to use only 64 kb as sound RAM. Mode 7 isn't 3D.
But yeah, the SNES has far better graphical capabilities. On the rest, they were equal or the MD was better, IMHO. Best (technically) of all 16-bitters were ofcourse the Neo-Geo, which was released before the SNES and was better than all in pretty much everything.

It also cost three or four times as much as the SNES. :)
And Mode 7 is 3D.

Yeah, and the SNES costed more than the Genesis and was released over two years later. Go figure.

The SNES wasn't more expensive than the Genesis. They both launched for $200 in the U.S. The Neo-Geo's price was almost four times that.

The Genesis was only $200 in test markets one month before actual launch. At that, it was $190 and it had dropped considerably when the SNES launched two years later. If you don't believe me you can read "The Ultimate History of Video Games: The Story Behind the Craze that Touched our Lives and Changed the World" by Steven L. Kent.

We're comparing launch prices. $190 and $200 are basically the same thing.
However, even if you go by the price of the Genesis at the end of 1991, the SNES was what, $50 more? Not three or four times more like the Neo-Geo.
I don't even remember why we're discussing this. :)

You began saying some false facts about the Genesis when comparing its hardware to the SNES. When I brought up the superior Neo-Geo, price was important all of a sudden, but only launch prices apparently. The NG doesn't seem to count in because its price is too high, while the SNES is almost at the same price as the Genesis and still so far better the strengths of the Genesis aren't even worth mentioning (or knowing?) somehow. :wink 2:

Oh yeah, you wrote that the Neo-Geo was the best 16-bit console. My point was that of course it was the best...it cost almost four times as much as the Genesis and SNES!

And my point was that the MD has its strengths over the SNES, but reading your posts it seems like you are denying them. :)

I am late to this thread, but in terms of the GameTrailer's list, Playstation number 1? No way. In fact, I don't understand the Sony love, since the PS2 was no better than the Xbox (worse in my opinion). While the order of systems is debatable, there are some which I could simply never accept as top 10. Turbo Grafx, 5200, 7800, Intellivision, Neo Geo, 3DO, Jaguar, Sega Saturn, and any other system which got trounced on the marketplace. I feel that if the system failed to sell, then it wasn't that great to begin with. There are some cases where the console is highly innovative and unique though, like the Vetrex.
PS: In terms of Genesis vs. SNES..... I had both when I was younger, played most of the games. I've been acquiring games for them again last couple years. SNES is better now. Sound, control, graphics, range of quality games. Everything is better. Frankly, as a kid, I gave up on the Genesis when they went to the Gen II and the red boxes. I like the games from the 1989-92 period though a lot. Back then, I probably was more towards the Genesis, but now it doesn't impress me as much. The SNES games now still impress me and give a more complete experience.
