I just pulled my NES out of the closet after 10 years to find it only playing games in Black & White...no color at all! :bawling:

Here are the facts:
#1 - It works great otherwise and used to display color fine.
#2 - I have cleaned the contacts on the system and games thoroughly.
#3 - I have tried AV and RF both with the same result.
#4 - I have tried numerous different acs, avs, rfs with the same result.
#5 - I have tested numerous games on different tvs with the same result.

I don't know what else to do.

Please :help:

take it apart, remove the 72 pin, clean the contacts where the 72 pin meets the motherboard.

Okay so I took it apart and cleaned the 72 pin connector and all the connecters to the motherboard. I used a toothbrush and q-tips with an alcohol based solution and I'm still getting a black and white picture.

Any other suggestions or different methods of cleaning?

The easiest fix is a replacement motherboard. It gets harder from there.

me thinks your motherboard is just plain dead...just get a new one. :(

I have a NES that displays the colors wrong, Greens are pink, Reds are purple, etc.

I was told that the PPU (Picture processing unit) was bad, which means a new motherboard.

i am wondeirng if something else is wrong, usually if a chip like the ppu goes bad it plain just stops, not slowing dieing distorting colors and such.

its a stumper

Most of the PPU's connections are address/data lines, and it spits out a composite video signal. In the grand scheme there just isn't a lot of external analog circuitry to fail. The PPU is both a digital & analog IC, so the analog section could drift without affecting the integrity of the rest of the machine. A decent static shock delivered to an A/V or RF cable could damage it without destroying it.

Ok I've got an update. After being told the thing was pretty much trash I decided to just douse the thing in cleaning solution. I pretty much drowned the thing. The next day after it was dry I hooked it up and turned it on just to see what would happen and crazily enough...it actually started displaying colors and working perfectly.
Today I turned it on though and it's back to black and white again...:grrr:
