Hey all!

Over in the Nintendo mistakes thread, I came upon a question I thought I'd bring up in a new thread.

How many games really had unique uses for all four face buttons on the SNES controller?

Granted, I haven't played a ton of SNES games, but the impression I got was usually that there were only two or three unique button functions, and you could choose which buttons were most comfortable.

Anybody with more SNES experience than me, feel free to share your observations.

I think many RPGs used all for different functions.

there are quite a few games that actually use all four, but usual 2 of the 4 do the exact same thing as the other ones do.

rpg's usually do use all of the buttons for different things though.

Games like F-Zero and Pilotwings made great use of the L and R shoulder buttons.

Many SNES games made use of most, if not all of the buttons on the controller. At the same time, many games didn't need that many buttons. The choice was up to the developer.

I thought the stock Genesis controller was pretty good, until I got a SNES. After that, it felt cheap and clunky to me. It's still decent though. :)

I´m 99.999999% sure that Super Smash TV used all 4 buttons. The control was perfect for that game, because the SNES was the only console supporting 4 buttons right next to each other like that. The controller was born for that game if you ask me.

I actually can't think of any fighting games that didn't use all four, including Battle Tycoon/Master (whatever the heck those were), King of the Monsters (both of 'em), Zoku (brawler/racer hybrid crap), etc.

Fighting games are an excellent example, thanks!

RPG's tho? Action, cancel, and menu, which was usually mapped to Start.

Keep in mind I'm just curious about the 4 face buttons, not the shoulder buttons, and not really so much the start & select buttons

Most sports games on the SNES used all four buttons for a unique purpose. The only exceptions are the more arcadey sims, like NBA Jam, etc.

Yeah, for baseball games in particular, four face buttons in a diamond shaped pattern is just a perfect layout, moreso than in fighting games.
