Way back in 03' I was reading Nintendo power and saw the ad for Ikaruga coming to Gamecube.

I immediately decided that I would buy it when it came out based on the review.

then all of a sudden, I just stopped playing video games for a few months and kind of forgot about it.

Now that I am rekindling my gamecube flame, since I got a Wii, I was looking for Ikaruga and astounded by the prices on ebay.

I don't mind paying for a good game, but is the game so pricey because its rare or because its rare, and a good game.

Thanks,
Steve

Looks like its going for around $50. And for $50? Yes, it's worth it...but prepare to suck for awhile until you learn the mechanics.

Remember that if you have a 360, Ikaruga will be coming out soon for XBLA...probably for $10 too. It may pay to wait. If you don't have a 360, $50 is a little steep for the Gamecube version IMO.

Damn, glad I bought it when it was $19.99!

It's a great game. Hard as shit, but a great game. I never got past the 4th or 5th boss, and I sucked at combos. It's a tough game with some crazy "bullet hell" scenes.

If you shop around im sure you will get it cheap plus the cube version is slightly better cause it has slow motion learning option to get your head around chaining combos. Please dont get the game if your not going to chain combos as its rubbish if you dont. Its hard from the 3rd level onwards but its not as hard as radiant silvergun but way more fun and addictive and has beefier sound effects.

:above me:

Beefier sound effects. I might have to put that in the quote of the year thread.

I'm going to remember that one.

I'm not a fan of Ikaruga personally -- I prefer "instant death" CAVE shooters like the DonPachi series. I don't think it's a bad game, but I found the polarity switching and chaining gimmicks to be more obnoxious than fun.

Same here. Well, I actually paid a little less since I bought it as part of a GameStop B2G1 sale going on at the time. I had to go all the way out to the other end of town to get to the nearest GS that had a copy, but it was worth it. One of my favorite shmups of all-time.
