I was wondering if they have started selling the systems without the Emotion Engine chip yet? If so, How can you tell them apart? Thanks for any help.

If i should guess, the serialnumber/modelnumber is different. I doubt you can see it on the outside of the box.

Not sure on this but I think the ones without the Emotion Engine use software emulation and allow the games to be upscaled to HD.

I am pretty sure that the software emulation is in Europe only right now.

The PS3's without the PS2 "emotion engine" use software emulation and therefore can only play a fraction of the PS2 library. As we've seen with the 360, backwards compatibility by emulation is a joke and is unacceptable for those who care about such things. Fortunately, the US and Japan are safe for now. All of our PS3's have the PS2 hardware included inside...but it is just a matter of time before Sony switches completely to emulation.

As far as upscaling...every PS2 game I play in my PS3 upscales to 480p according to my TV. All previous 480i only titles are now 480p. Whether this is truly 480p is another story. They don't look any better than they did in my PS2 (with component cables).

I just googled a bunch of articles from feb and march about this and they all stated that the US and Japan would get the EE-less PS3s starting in April. Can anyone confirm if this indeed changed?

What articles are you reading? Sony has never announced that the US and Japan would be changing over to emulation. Repeat: All PS3's in the US and Japan still contain the emotion engine. I love the internet rumor train.

I've also heard this, that Japan and USA PS3 model will get the EE chip removed too. Dont remember where, but i've read it :)

The PS3's with the EE chip are the good ones. It's the only way people can play every PS2 game right out of the box. Same thing goes for the PS1 chip.

With the EE chip out of the PS3, How much did Sony save
