While the touch screen feature of the DS can make games more enjoyable (as Pokemon Diamond and Pearl players have recently learned), the innovative aspect of the Wii (its controller) does not.

Um.
What's wrong with having Wii games use the standard Analog stick and D-pad?
(shrug)
Just because the OPTION to use motion-sensors exists, doesn't mean it has to be used. You use it for games that need it, and don't use it for games that don't need it.
Simple.
But then its nothing more than a Gamecube!
Seriously tho, you're right. The developers doesnt have to use the motion sensing in a Wii game, but i'm sure you will hardly see any games that doesnt use the motion sensing in one way or another. Motion sensing is what the Wii is all about. Without it, whats left, a Gamecube? Hehe

This article is ferociously gay.
The author is implying that the DS is a failure, when in reality it is the most successful system in recent history, and for all the right reasons.
The Wii WILL be similar to the DS, in that it will be a colossal success because Nintendo knows what the hell they're doing.
People naysayed the DS shortly after launch too, but I didn't think anyone had the cajones to do it now, when it effectively rules the world.
Yeah... article seems like a pretty poorly-written rant... tries to say the Wii will fail because the DS will fail... yet the DS is a monstrous success.
Almost everything on there is either a) flat out wrong (DS games stayed too short and simple? The graphics won't improve? Graphics always improve on every system over it's lifetime) or b) applicable to all systems (manufacturer will release anything, crappy FPS and racers come out, lots of puzzle games will come out, companies will release nearly identical games)
About everything else... better chance of a good RPG on Wii than 360 (and the GBA didn't have a plethora of good RPGs for quite a while). Kiddo games galore is becoming a more and more meaningless stereotype, and the idea that Nintendo won't support it's own system with enough games is ludicrous.
The only thing that does really worry me IS that the wiimote sensing (especially on the Z-axis) is poor and may not improve. Think of Rayman and Monkeyball with in-and-out minigames. Think of Wii Golf and putting, think of Wii Boxing period.

At times people bicker over many topis here. Hard to believe, I know. I think the "just my opinion" caveat is the persons quiet plee to leave a comment without having to get into a debate or receive an avalanche of critical comments. That said, "just my opinion".
As for the article... The DS rules the roost now. Sales are great. Games are pretty varied and I like the overall quality. The Wii needs more time to establish itself like the DS has. Yes sales of the unit are leaving stock low but that seems to be a production issue, partially. It does not have the array of titles yet to deem it in the DS league. At the same time it is showing progress.
With a humble heart, on bended knee...
I agree, I thought the article was poorly written and researched. If the early momentum can be built upon, then I think we will see a DS sized success. And to think the DS has been anything less than a success is crazy.
To heybtbm, I respect your opinion, but with out anything to back it up, the thought is invalid. I don't mean to insult you by any means, but you always, always have to give reasons. Anybody that wrote an essay in school knows that: Here is what I think, and why. That isn't to say we should all write an Anthony1 essay style post, but a little expansion of a thought never hurt anyone.

The wii is going to get some great games here soon. After the Nintendo big guns are released (MP3, SMG), the third party games will get better once the devs learn how to push the envelope. Games get better after the first year. The DS titles got better down the road...

Now come on, the man's username is Wang Runner...
I think partially the reason the DS is so successful is that it's portable system and the touch screen is a really good thing,
I really don't see the Wii following the same path as the DS, I still see the sales of the Wii leveling off.
I love my DS and think it's a great system but I just don't see the Wii following the DS all in all.

I can clearly see the Wii following the DS. Game designers will learn that you don't need to use the motion controls for everything, much like you don't always need two gameplay screens or a faux-analog-stick with the DS. It's all about moderation: don't stick in things that muck up the gameplay just because you can.
Though, if the games don't wind up looking any better than Gamecube games -- and more than likely, they'll never really push much further -- I won't be one to complain too much. A lot of Cube games still look really nice, even first-gen ones (Luigi's Mansion and Rogue Leager come to mind...).
I think the problem is that developers are over using the Wii's motion sensing. I think the Wii-mote should be used for two things.
1. Pointer.
2. Motion to do basic attacks.
Sort of like in Zelda, accept it can be done better. Swing left, Link swings left. Swing right, Link swings right. Slash down, Link slashes down.
The pointer for the bow, etc.
Anything else should use the other buttons. Things requiring crazy motions shoudn't be done. I think a game like SSX Blur was on the right track, it just needed a little more time to iron out more variations (so the tricks would register better).
There needs to be a balance.
Anyway, the Wii's sales will probably slow until Wii Health Pack is released, then I expect to see a major jump in sales equaling that of Brain Age.
