Default XBOX HDTV 1080i 16x9 discussion

This has been bugging me for awhile, and maybe some of you with an Xbox and a widescreen HDTV can help me out here.

The Xbox is running on PC hardware, with what is essentially a geforce3 inside it, right? And since it is outputting to standard televisions, I expect the resolution is probably set to 640x480 (or something close) normally. Now, if you set the xbox two widescreen, then the resolution jumps to 720x480, and if you have an hdtv, then the resolution jumps again to 1024x640 (or some such number).

So, if there are xbox games that support HDTV and widescreen, then does the performance of the game take a hit? if I'm playing Rallisport Challenge on a 16x9 widescreen tv, does the normally buttery 60fps drop to 30fps when there is a lot onscreen? It seems to make sense that it will happen, but nobody has yet addressed this issue.

An HDTV is not yet in my budget.. maybe in 3 years or so.

Well, only one game so far supports 1080i and that's Dragons Lair 3D. There are some issues with the framerate, but it runs pretty well overall. It's all up to the developers I guess.

It shouldn't affect the framerate at all, At least I've never noticed any slowdown

My friend recently got a 52" widescreen, projection HDTV and an Xbox.
We went out and bought commponent cables for it and fired it up in HDTV mode, and all I can say is: BREATHTAKING.

Not only does your framerate not change at all, but the sharpness of the images has to be seen to be believed.

Bear in mind, specific games may or may not support HDTV, but many Xbox games do, such as: Apex, Rallisport, Panzer Dragoon, Halo, Unreal Championship, etc, and they all looked unbelievable. I thought I was playing a different game. Truly amazing.

Remember though, you need to first go to the video option on the Xbox dashboard and enable the different Video modes AFTER you plug in the component cables for the effects to take place. Simply pluggin in the component cables is not enough.

I have never noticed any of my XBOX games playing any differently on my new TV (I honestly don't know much about performance issues). All I can say is that they look amazing. My wife actually gets car sick watching me play Rallisport Challenge.

My old TV was a 27" Sony WEGA :/

My new TV is a 50" Sony Wide Plasma WEGA
