If you've ever played both versions, which did you like better?
ColecoVision (of course!)
Atari 5200 (scrolls nicely!)
If you've ever played both versions, which did you like better?
Mine goes to the ColecoVision, but not by much.
I do like the radar dishes and planes on the asteroids in the 5200 version. I also think the increase in difficulty is better.
However, I don't like the 2-D fight in space, the awkward firing, the sometimes questionable collision-detection, the lack of rocket ports, and the way Zaxxon is done at the end- it looks more like a cross between Shirley Temple and a jukebox. And where the hell is the missile if you fly too high?
The ColecoVision version also has a better 3-D look to it. Also, Zaxxon is much more impressive. As are the screen graphics.
The ColecoVision version would have been much better with more difficulty in later levels. And some randomness, such as the gaps in the forcefield walls. But right off, the worst part is the fact that, if you stay as close to the ground as possible, you cannot be hit by rockets, and the sideways-firing domes have a tough time hitting you. I'm of mixed feelings about the Mobots; with more (randomized) walls, this would have been truly excellent, if unlike the arcade.
Neither captures the feel of the arcade version, though.
No C-64 option?
Or SG-1000?
Or arcade?
Or 2600?
Or 32X?
IT COUNTS!

Nope. Just third-generation home console.
Wow. A lot of votes for the CV version. I always found that to be the weak link in the CV lineup. It pops and jerks so badly its nearly unplayable. The graphics are good, but like most games available on both systems it's not as good as the 5200. Im guessing its the 5200 controllers that give this the bad rap, although the CV sticks cramp my hands after about 3 mins so I dont find them much better.
Heh, I've actually played the SG-1000 version more than the others. That's not to say it's the best version, because the SG-1000 has some very inferior ports on it. It's not bad though.
Zaxxon, Zaxxoff, Zaxxon, Zaxxoff...
I picked Colecovision.
Since I was one of the lucky ones who never owned a 5200*, I'd have to say, "Colecovision."
*-A friend of mine had one, and told me to avoid it like the fucking plague. I played it a little, and after a control broke with little effort, he said, "See what I mean?"
Gimmie a game, I'll either love it, or pimp-smack it.
