Default Help! Silver PS2 with no video or anything!!!

Hi there, I picked up a silver PS2 on an auction site, and it doesn't work. It said it didn't work, but I assumed they didn't test it right, because the picture was of the PS2 with the green light on, and they said they couldn't get any picture or sound out of it. The AV cable wasn't plugged in obviously, so I took a chance that with the cable, it would indeed work.

But it doesn't. It has no video, no sound, and I can't even hear the disc spinning at all. Otherwise, its in as new condition.

    Any ideas?

Maybe I should clarify my request. If I wanted "Hey idiot" comments, I'd have just talked to my wife.

First of all, is this a common error similar to a disc read error?

Second, is this something that can be fixed? I don't mind paying for it to be fixed, but just want to see if it can, that's all.

Motherboard problem is likely. If it';s been tampered with, could be a failed mod, and a likely fried board. If it's a pro, he could have mated a bad board with a bad laser for good measure, before he sold it 'broken'.

This is why OSG does not sell 'broken' systems. You do not want a broken system from a professional. You really don't.

A "disc read error" is when the laser has trouble reading the disc. The disc will spin and the PS2 logo/startup will appear on your TV. It doesn't sound like your even getting that far. I would say it's an electrical issue. Maybe your board got soaked (or something spilled on it).

A possible issue could be that the PS2 is set to RBG or some strange video setting (remote possibility...I know).

    Call Sony.

In that case, would I need to get a component cable to reset it? Or is there some button somewhere that can reset it to factory settings?

As for the other ideas about the tampering, I don't think so. The seal's not broken.

If i had to throw a guess down, i'd say you have a blown fuse...

Have fun with that, there are 17 of them on the board. And just because the seal hasn't been broken, doesn't mean the console hasn't been opened...

Oh, and this picture is probably bigger then the actual board you'll be working on, so i hope you're good with a soldering iron.

I called Sony, told them the story, and they are going to exchange mine with a new one for $45, which I thought was mighty cool of them. Just had to read the serial number, and verify the seal wasn't broken and it was a no-brainer for them.
