    Default Which consoles play VCDs?

I don't know if this is a classics thread per se, but I was wondering which consoles other than the Phillips CD-i play Video CDs. Thanks.
Currently catching up on PSN, WiiWare, Wii U E-Shop and Xbox Live Arcade exclusives I missed.

The Dreamcast can, using either homebrew or unlicensed third party apps.

    3DO could.

Seeing as most DVD players can play VCDs, I wonder if PS2/Xbox/360/PS3 can play them.

The rather rare white Hong Kong Playstation (PSX) plays VCDs straight out of the box.

The other Playstation VCD units are 3rd party accessories that either attach to the parallel port or require internal soldering.

The 3DO does play VCDs, but only with the VCD module. I believe it was only sold in Japan, but it definitely works with US systems, too.

    The US PS2 can't play VCD's. I'm pretty sure the Xbox1 can't either.

XBOX cannot play VCD's, I've tried. Technically the Optical drives themselves can read the format, but the systems don't have the programming created for it.

As per usual, the homebrew DC scene is as far as you have to look. Man, the dreamcast is awesome.

Modded Xboxes can play multiple video formats (including S/VCDs) with programs like Xbox Media Center.

    http://xboxmediacenter.com

From the site: XboxMediaCenter is a free open source (GPL) multimedia player for the Xbox™ from Microsoft. Currently XboxMediaCenter can be used to play/view most common video/audio/picture formats such as MPEG-1/2/4, DivX, XviD, MP3, AAC, JPG, GIF plus many more less known formats directly from a CD/DVD in Xbox DVD-ROM drive or of Xbox hard-drive, XBMC can also stream files from a PC over a local network and even stream media streams directly from the internet. XBMC has playlist and slideshow functions, a weather forecast and many audio visualizations. All these features enable the Xbox™ running XboxMediaCenter to fully function as a multimedia jukebox. XBMC is easy to install and use, it's very convenient and flexible plus offers a great price/performance ratio. XBMC is of also course completely free of any adware or spyware. (This, The XboxMediaCenter Project is also known as "Xbox Media Center" or simply "XBMC").

Right. Modded Xboxes can do a lot of things, but I never did so for fear of breaking the machine.

Yeah XBMC is surely the finest, most useful piece of homebrew ever. It's played absolutely everything I've ever thrown at it.

I can't seem to find any VCD utility for PS2. Even the SMS Media Player doesn't do it.

Pioneer Laseractives play VCDs though. Hurrah, VCD playback on your Megadrive / PC Engine. Sort of.....

dont you meen all 3 US 3DO's can play VCDs
im not sure about the sanyo system tho, maybe it can use the adaptor from the FZ1

Goldstar had its own and is the cheapest to get because it was sold in the states also
the other 2 are harder to get ahold of and are alittle more expensive for the FZ1 and FZ10 i think these 2 were only sold in japan

i quit using my CDi for my VCDs when i got my first DVD player in 2002

my Treamcast came with a vcd adaptor and a remote

I think the TurboDuo can also. I remember mine came with a music disc that ran image and lyrics with it. Or is that something different.

    Any NEC experts know?

    No, that's CD+G.

Not really a system per se, but the v64 does, and adds some sort of 3d sound to it IIRC.
