Default Complete U.S. Genesis Collection and more

Hello everybody. I have a strange situation going on here. I am one manual and one box away from having every U.S. Genesis game complete (705 games, I don't have the Miracle Piano or Blockbuster cart but everything else).

The problem is I am going to move soon. My collection has gotten so ridiculous it demands its own room. The idea of having to get an extra room in the house I'm looking to buy just for games is at the same time awesome and also annoying. If I had the means to get a nice big house where all of my stuff could stay in the basement in a sweet ass game room that would be great. But I'm looking at little two bedroom houses and these games are like a roommate that doesn't pay rent.

So anyway I have a little over 2000 games and I need to trim it down drastically. I have been sadly deliberating which parts of my collection to sell. I have though about selling the more common games from all systems and keeping the rares but I never know when to stop. In the end all I really want to sell are the sports and kids games. So I decided the best thing to do in terms of gaining space and money is to sell only my Genesis stuff and keep all the SMS, Sega CD, not sure about 32X yet and Saturn.

At well over 900 games, the sale of my Genesis/Mega Drive collection will provide not only a ton of money (down payment on the house) but half a rooms worth of space. I would then probably be able to make the trip without one of those giant Uhauls which is another advantage.

So anyway, I was wondering, what do you guys think this collection is worth if sold as a whole? I was thinking the average game would be worth between $10 - $20. All of the U.S. games are complete (except two which will be complete soon) and there are a TON of variations and factory sealed games. The condition of the games is rather amazing and at least 1/3 of the games have posters, registration cards and other paperwork.

I can't believe it, I have worked so long and hard to make this Genesis collection and I must sell it shortly after it's complete. But I really have little choice here. So without further heartache from me, here's the game list including hardware. The are some cool hardware things that aren't on here but not much.

Unfortunately I'm thinking that the average Genesis game is worth more like $1-$10, even complete. Sadly most Genesis games aren't worth much.

This thread is a perfect thread for the new forum so I moved it.

If money isn't the issue here, I would suggest boxing up the worse games for the time being and storing them in a closet or something. I think about selling alot of my stuff often, but know I will always regret it.

    Default looks good BUT

U are missing two. I forgot about outback joey. If it can fit into the sega it counts. The blockbuster cart I would have to say doesnt count kind of the the pirate carts.

I'm not sure if you've considered it, but outside storage for games you don't play would be a good idea. (Trusted) friends and family or storage places might be best.

That's the first thought I had when reading this too. For whatever reason Genesis games don't come close to SNES or even NES in value. I would say $1-5 might be more like it for a majority of the library.

You may be right but I don't think so. I sell a lot of Genesis games on eBay and if I have a good wave they will average at least $6 in summer and up to $10 in winter. And they are not all complete, about 20% of the games I sell are boxed only. I don't sell sports games too much but I think those would average out from the rare/popular games. I do sell rares but I never have so many as I do now. I can all but guarantee $10 per game if I sold them individually on eBay.

Every closet I have available to me is chock full of games. I also have games just sitting in the middle of my bedroom on the floor in boxes.

I do consider the Miracle Piano a standard U.S. release but not the Blockbuster or Outback Joey.

I don't know anyone who would be willing to store things for me. My family is great to me but when it comes to stuff like this I'm on my own. Any storage I would be able to arrange would be very temporary.

It's pretty hard to find complete Genesis games of any kind for $5 or less including shipping from eBay. And considering the condition of the games I have there really are hardly any games worth less than $5. If you look at some completed auctions on eBay even you'll see even the weakest games will sell decently. For instance, someone paid $11 shipped for NHL '97 complete recently. All of the games that did sell went for $6 shipped at lowest and the $11 shipped was the highest. And that's for the NHL hockey series, one of the most common series available.

WHy is Outback Joey not considered an "Official release"? It has the Sega Seal of Quality on it. It's an official release. It's not some made up game, it went through Sega. Do we not consider the Mountain Bike Rally/Speed Racer SNES cart as part of the set?

AShbury: You honestly consider the Blockbuster Cart more like a pirate? I would not consider it an official release. It's a contest cart, but I think people know better than that.

If you get rid of your collection you will kick yourself in the ass later, believe me i know from experience. Thinking to myself i'll never play that game or system again and then get rid of it, then years later i start looking for that game again and pay twice as much too. Just keep your collection you'll thank me later.

I don't really know, I was thinking Christmastime. That would be good because I'm planning on moving to Nebraska in spring.

I suppose you're right. The release list I have doesn't have it and as far as I knew it was a never released prototype. But after some more searching it seems it was a limited release, and to have it complete you have to have the friggen exercise bike too. I really don't want that, I would be happy with a loose cart on that one and Miracle Piano. How funny, I'm talking about selling but I still want to complete the collection.

Just keep your collection you'll thank me later.
I never thought I'd never play it again. It is totally a space and money consideration. It took me just over two years to complete the collection (sans Outback Joey and Miracle Piano) so I'm confident I could re-collect almost all of it. I know these games are only becoming more rare and some things like sealed Bible games won't be easy, but I think it can be done.

705 Genesis games? The last time I checked I thought there were 708. But I could be wrong. Does anyone else know?

Scratch part of what I said earlier, Outback Joey was designed to work with any exercise bike. Was the Blockbuster cart a retail release too? I heard it was not.

If sold as a one-time, winner-take-all auction, I'd say you should be looking in the range of $4300-$5200 (before shipping) for everything (including extras, variants, Canadian releases, imports, pirates, etc.). 'Tis true, though, Genesis stuff in general isn't in very high demand, with the exception of a small handful of decent games and a couple rarer pieces of hardware...I wouldn't be surprised if an eBay auction for everything together *didn't* break $4000.

Edit: And the Blockbuster cart I'm pretty sure was not a retail release .

The Outback Joey system was very limited, and had a cool outer box, but like the Exertainment Mountain Bike Rally crap, no way I am fitting all that crap in here, so that one STAYS cart only. Miracle Pianos I can see, but even those are bulky, so all depends on one's living arrangements.

Blockbuster cart was NOT a retail release. It's unknown how many of those carts even exist to be honest. I know of at least 2, myself and Nicola each have one.

I wouldn't sell them in a lot for that price. That's about half of my lowest estimate for selling them individually.

I wonder, is their any record of an auction like that on eBay before? Does anyone remember one?

I honestly think you can get around 10K for all of that if listed correctly and they are in great shape. You mind need one of the "rares" to get it, though.
