Default Sony now being sued for its cell processor

    http://www.joystiq.com/2007/07/31/ma...wsuit-demands/

Sony's just raking up the lawsuits, aren't they? This one could hurt, though...

Wait, how does this make sense?

I mean isn't this what Dual / Multiple Core processors on standard PCs are, as well? Aren't they infringing this so-called "patent" too? Why go against Sony?

Not exactly. While I haven't read the specifics of this patent, my understanding behind parallel processing is not in the use of multicore processors, but actually using different processors whithin the system that don't really share the processing tasks, but more are designed to handle specific tasks. Since the current batch of multicore procs all have the cores still within the confines of basically a single CPU they aren't really seperate on the system. In addition, they thread the tasks or hand off processing duties to the other cores. Most software for the multi core systems isn't really written to hand specific functions to one processor and different functions to the other.

However, given this idea of parallel processing, a few other systems do come to mind that would likely be included as infringing. The Saturn especially, and the 32x module adapter. In some ways you could look at the Jaguar perhaps as being in this catagory. But the Saturn definitely qualifies as it directly used parallel processing and coding for many of its games as I understand it?

Still, when the immersion lawsuit took place many people scoffed and laughed at it at first as well thinking that immersion didn't stand a chance against the size of a company like Sony. Yet we know how that ended up...

It's cute how this "Parallel Processing Corporation" doesn't exist outside of the lawsuit. It's just some random people/corporation that got lucky with the patent system, formed a new partnership, then filed in good ol' Texas as usual.

I wonder if IBM and Toshiba are named along with Sony since the three of them jointly developed it?

(I didn't do much research into it)

If it knocks Sony off their white pony and forces them to embrace reality, I'm all for every Average Joe lining up and chucking the book at them.

I'm have very, very limited knowledge in the legal field but this sounds sketchy. From a hardware design aspect it just doesn't appear to be a solid case.

Look for Microsoft to suddenly buy into this company.

To me, it seems like the whole "impound and destroy all PS3s" part of the suit is designed to ramp up the importance of the lawsuit, just to make Sony realise that it would be cheaper to just buy this 'company' out or just pay them off without going to court. It's clearly a money-grubbing scheme by this company. I'd really like Sony to fight them and destroy these people.

Apple got sued years back over their Colorsync technology by some little company that nobody had ever heard of. Once the lawsuit drug on long enough, it was discovered that this company never had any patents in regard to anything even remotely similar to Apple's Colorsync. They just hoped that Apple would pay them off out-of-court before anybody bothered to dig too deep into the company's patents.
