    Default S-video mods?

    (1) Is it possible, and (2) if so, how difficult is it to do an S-video output mod for the following systems?

    Atari 7800
    Atari 5200
    NES
    Genesis

Also, where do I go to learn how do do such mods?

2600, 5200, and 7800 an be done. Just check the hardware FAQ over at www.atariage.com

NES is fixed at composite and can't be modded without replacing the PPU with a version th at supports S-Video (PPU is custom so unless you can make CPU from scratch, your SOL)

I can't remember if Genesis can support S-Video directly or with mod.

The Genesis can be modded for Svid. It uses the same CXA1145 RGB chip that the Neo-Geo and the SMS use, and can be modded using the same technique. See my page for details, and some bad before/after pics (soon to be replaced).

Psst...omnedon...click on the words "my page" in FABombjoy's post.

I am sad to see that my model 2 Genny can not be modded for S-video.

Well, I scoped around the Genesis-2 RGB chip tonight, and unfortunately, it really doesn't seem to have the proper Y/C outputs for svideo. I was hopeful, since the datasheet lists several pins as 'no connect', but they're not secretly hooked up to anything (except 5v and 2v sources). Oh well.

No S Video or RGB can be gotten from NES systems. To try and do so is to go mad. Trust me, I put about 120 man-hours of research into it, to no avail. The PPU outputs NTSC video right from the leg of the chip. Trying to get it to function in RGB would mean:

    1. Building an expensive PCB with expensive chips and pots to separate the color and sync signals. By the time the signal goes through all those chips, the picture quality you hope to gain is gone.

    2. Getting the RGB/SCART outputting PPU out of a Famicom/TV combo unit. Good luck finding one, and if you do, WHY BOTHER GUTTING IT FOR A CHIP WHEN YOU CAN USE AN NES ADAPTER ON IT AND PLAY GAMES IN RGB AS IT IS?

    3. Getting an RGB outputting PPU from an Nintendo Playchoice. These don't exactly grow on trees, as we all know.

Much simpler method would be to just mod your Dreamcast for RGB and use the NES emulator, as I ended up doing.
