Default Hasbro/Tiger Net Jet. Seen this thing?

    http://www.hasbro.com/tiger/netjet/d...duct_id=19091#

saw this advertised while capping some TV earlier, anyone tried it yet? I'm very curious to know if the "games" actually have data on them, or if they are charging 15 dollars for serial keys to flash puzzle bobble clones. Oh wait, pogo is already doing that sort of thing....

But yeah, what the hell? This looks like something to keep an ee out for in clearance, but if I'm right about it all being download-based, they'll also be rendered totally useless after awhile.

Yeah, looks like the 'key' just give you access to the game on their website. I've seen something similar in the UK.

But this doesn't work with Mac OS, therefore it's shite anyway.

I had a look at one of the games at TRU the other day, it said something about servers only being required to stay online until 2009 maybe? i don't recall the exact date.

They had a "demo unit", but it was just a controller with a game stuck in it and a video that would play. For what it's worth however...I sorta like it's analog stick.

Default Can we use this as a standalone usb controller.

I saw this at Wal-Mart on Friday for $20. I also read on the back that the servers were only required to stay online till 2009. As far as a system and the games it looks like crap. But the controller feels very very nice and is very similar to a SuperNES controller.

What I'm wondering is if this is recognized as a standard USB controller. If so, you could ignore the games and use this as a very very nice emulator controller?

Anyone willing to take the plunge to find out?

I hate seeing shit like this sold in stores...I refuse to buy anything that I can't play again in 10 or 20+ years. When I buy a game, I want to own it, not rent it.

Agreed. Anytime there is something like this, my mind immedately starts wondering about the hack potentials, ie, would it make a decent usb controller? The dpad on it is kinda nice...

So I picked one of these up at a garage sale today. It's a weird device. It installs itself as a mass storage device, which i expected. But it also installs itself as a CD ROM drive, which is how you start up the software. Pretty weird. Apparently the CD rom driver is also what's taking the controller's input. This is obviously a problem.

There are three tiers of games in the software, the ones that come on keys, shitty lowres flashlike games, and "deluxe" ones. The key gives you the key game, and three flashlikes of your choice. The deluxe ones cost extra I guess. You also get 30 minutes of playtime to try out the other key/deluxe games.

Mine came with a puzzle bobble clone as it's key game, and I picked a few of the "choice" games. They are pretty bad, very basic stuff. The key games seem to be half decent, I'll see if I can find some cheaply in clearance in the future.

The software says that the servers will all be shut down at the end of the year, but seem to be functioning fine right now. I downloaded and played my demo of marble blast for example.

The controller itself is ok, but my main peeve is that this thing doesn't do the one thing I wanted it for, which was show up as a standard USB controller in windows. I was hoping to use it for some emulators. Hopefully someone has made some drivers that make it useful, haven't seen any yet though.

Oh hey, fun update. I went and looked at how this installs the games it downloads...the "trial" time is handled by the net jet "software" (it's a webpage that launches in IE), which means you can just run the exe directly from the install and play as long as you want. I wonder if this is intentional since the servers go down soon, or just really really weak security. Basically, all those games you see for sale in stores you can just download and play.

That's true, BUT you must get the key, install it, connect to the Web Site so it can write the key code info into the install file in the game's directory. Once you do that, THEN you can play without an Internet connection. So if you find those games real cheap, buy them and register the key before the end of the year!

IT really shouldn't be a complex thing to write, if you are the type of person who knows how to write drivers. I'm not, and anyone who is doens't seem interested, so it hasn't happened yet to my knowledge.
