    Default DDR With A Joystick

After jumping about like an idiot today on my DDR pad I decided to see what would happen if I plugged my joystick in instead of the pad. To my surprise it actually works! You can play DDR with the keypad and buttons just like you can with the pad. Now here's my question, is this considered cheating?

To me it's alot more fun because I can actually do the hard songs and score fairly well (got a B on Rhythm and Police). I find that really zone out when I play it though and just sink into the rhythm. It's like a totally different game with the pad, and I like it. Anyone else ever try this?

I used to do that all the time. It helps a LOT with learning how to read arrows. Until you get to the 7- or 8-foot level, anyway.

I actually had the first DDR (import PSX) before I owned a pad and thought YAWN.

    Then I got a pad.

To me it's just no fun pressing the D-pad in the direction the arrow tells you to go, it just seems so... LAME. But maybe that's just me. The whole fun spirit of the game has always been the pad, and as WHITE as I am when I play, it's still more fun than playing follow-the-leader with a joypad.

For some reason playing with the pad always makes me with I had a maracca game. It's REALLY too bad all the music games are so damned expensive with their respective peripherals...

On topic, I haven't tried it, but I may now One of the reasons I stopped playing DDR is because my living room shakes when I jump, and I fear for my beautiful TV's health (Convergence and all)

Let me put it this way: it's not cheating, but it's not impressive either. :-) If you're looking for button mashing games, get a 5 key Beatmania; that will keep you busy for a while.

I've found that I like playing with the joystick for those impossibly fast songs (Rhythm & Police or Healing Vision on Heavy, etc.), but for the rest the pad is better.

Anyone ever play with one of these: http://www.redoctane.com/dandanrevcon.html

I've seen one that looks better, it was a controller, with 2 mini side by side DDR pads, that way you have a pad for each thumb. It's pictured on the back booklet of one of my import DDR games.
My life and perception has changed, but my principals are the same.

They're awful. The buttons are junk, very non-responsive, noisy, and generally displeasing. Only redeeming factor of these things is that it is easier to build your own hard pad with the PCB in it than with the PCB in a regular controller.
