Default A complete US SMS collection in one purchase!

EDIT - Thanks to the intrepid DP forum regulars, I've found my collection to be a BIT less than complete, but that's how it was sold to me ... and at the time of purchase ... it was a tough and tight call to make considering how many duplicates and prototypes were in the mix. Still, a mighty good haul for a one-off buy!

Haha, I had shared this story a few times via PM before I even realized there was a "lore" forum!

So, here it is for all the DP world to see :

Back when I was managing Funcoland (I was there from 1996 to 2001 that's Sega Saturn all the way through PS2 launch) ... I think it was around 1998, the ex head of marketing for Sega for the US East Coast (he said he worked for them for a short time back when they were affiliated/owned by TONKA corp.) came into my store and asked if we took trade-ins on Sega Master System games.

I told him no, but that I was a classic game collector, so if he wanted to bring in whatever he had, I'd make him an offer.

He then explained to me who he was, and said "I've got a complete collection of Master System games, systems, and some accessories & prototypes."

I half didn't believe him, so I tried to call his bluff just by telling him to bring it in and I'd do my best to make him an offer. He was just interested in picking up a used NES and a bunch of games for his family ... as they had grown tired of the SMS stuff he had lying around.

About an hour later, he drove up to the store and I saw him and his son carrying what looked to be a box the size of a small dishwasher. He plopped it down in the center of the sales floor, and I went out to take a look. There were a few hundred games inside (all boxed execpt for the protos, and many still sealed), about 3 SMS 1 units, a SMS 2, an just about every accessory that you could imagine (control sticks, 3D glasses, sports pads, etc.). I went through just about all the games while I was there, and being familliar with the SMS library - I was pretty sure that he was correct in his claim of it being "complete" (though for those in the know "complete" in the US is far less games than "complete" in Europe or other regions) I offered him $200 for the lot, and he took it without hesitation!!

I wound up with a few games that were only in prototype form in the US (even though they saw commercial release in Europe and Japan) like Out-Run 3-D (for the 3D glasses)...and I sold off most of the many duplicate retail games (there were 3 copies of Phantasy Star, so I practically made back my whole purchase price and then some on that!)

It was quite the day at ol' Funcoland...and while the prototypes are long gone (nothing that was never released SOMEWHERE in the world, so no worries) I still have the complete US retail collection, the systems, and accessories safely boxed up in my art studio.

(To date, my favorite SMS games are My Hero, Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Psycho Fox, and Action Fighter.)

You didn't happen to take pics of the lot before storing/selling it away did you? I would LOVE to see that little slice of heaven.

Interestingly enough, I was just in my art studio (where the collection is stored) working on a new MAME cabinet.

I have a Dig Dug machine that I bought on the cheap about 10 years ago that has finally crapped out ... and since the estimate on the PCB repairs are more than I paid for the cabinet, I figured now would be a great time to make a bigger better cabinet than I already have (I modified one of those Konami "Big Arcade" Machines that they were selling last holiday season ... added a CPU with MAME, about 300 games and DAPHNE the Dragon's Lair Laserdisc emulator) but the thing is a bit on the "short" side about 4 foot 5 ... so I'm transferring the CPU over to the gutted Dig-Dug cabinet, I made some new Marquee art, and I purchased a 2-player X-Arcade stick at THE Digital Press store today ...

... when the paint on the side of the cabinet dries, I will absolutely move it out of the way and take a picture of the SMS cartridge collection!

(If you're interested, here's a pic of my MAME cabinet in progress...the SMS cart collection is in the BLUE tub to the left of it.)

I have a complete US SMS collection too:

But instead of showing it here is a picture of some dreamcast games. (If you are interested the SMS games are under the table). :P

New Brunswick eh? I would work remote shifts at the East Brunswick Funcoland on occasion.

Anyway, I would have posted these yesterday, but I accidentally hacked a small bit of my finger off during my MAME construct ... so, you know, pain, bandages, etc. got in the way.

Here's the collection in it's storage bins.

Great story! I like the look of your MAME cab, particularly the "Arcade Classics" marquee.

Thanks! I've always wanted to make one ... but I never really had the tools, time, cash, or engineering skills to build one from the ground up ... when my Dig-Dug cab bit the dust, I figured ... seize the day, no?

Unless they are in another box...not complete but getting close:

    http://vgrebirth.org/games/search.as...ns=1&x=40&y=12

....I'd say there are maybe 90 or so in that one bin.

Let's see Spider-Man & Sonic with US barcodes.

What kind of PC and controllers are you going to use? Will you use a frontend for MAME?

Yeah, now that I reference that list, it's probably a BIT LESS than complete.

But when I originally bought the lot, there were duplicates of just about every single title. It was well over 200 boxed carts...so, even being just shy of complete, it was hard for me to reference then, and I never really did until now. Only looks like I'm missing a few titles.

Damn ... I KNOW I DIDhave a copy of Sonic, but, as I jog my memory, I'm thinking I must have given it to a friend of mine who was really into Sonic.

I have the Plug-and-Play TV SMS Play-Pal which has Sonic 1, 2, and the rest of the sonic games they made for SMS and Game Gear on it...so I can still experience it in SMS format if I really want to.

But I fished Spidey out of the box...as per your request. It is multi-region packaging, but here's the US barcode ... sticker, thing.

    Enjoy!

I like the sticky note...I'll be over this afternoon to pick it up. :P

Even if it isn't totally complete, it's still an awesome collection.
