Game Boy games used battery saves, just like pretty much everything else at the time. Also, Alleyway doesn't have battery backup, so your scores are gone once you shut the Game Boy off.
I know Kirby pinball land saved scores
Yep, Alleyway is a bitch. I figured the game was impossible for five years until the Super Game Boy came out. I beat it within a week then. The big screen made the entire difference.
The game actually has an ending, though not a very good one.

They use battery back up to save just like the NES, SNES, GEN etc. etc.
Hey, look, the ending is on Youtube.

I think I made it up to Stage 20 when I borrowed it from a friend.

There's 32 levels, which includes the 8 bonus levels. I believeyou get a heart on screen after you beat it, (2 hearts, I think, or some other symbol for beating it twice) leading me to believe it does some sort of Galaga-like ranking thing. Dunno how high the ranks go, though, or if the endings get different (can't remember if the second ending was the same)! I'd love to know, but I don't have the patience to find out.
