    Default Gamer nationality sterotypes...

Ok, so the sterotype of different gamers worldwide is an interesting concept - where do they come from? Is there any truth in the sterotype or perceptions and are the stereotypes because of / or reflect the differences in our culture and gaming history in our respective territories?

Coming from the UK i would say my sterotypes of the two other big gaming regions are as follows:

Japanese gamers: Play RPG's, train simulators, Manga porn games. game mainly alone. Has a core of Hardcore players who frequent a still healthy arcade scene to play 2D fighters only next to rows of Pachinko machines. Everyone owns a DS - it's the only console that will fit in their houses.

USA Gamers: Play only Xbox, which they fell in love with last gen originaly because it was physically the biggest goddam machine on the shelf. Only plays with others, in the garage - with cans of beer on a setee. Only plays NBA or NFL titles, which they only play on 50 inch screens.

Obviously gamers in these countries are not like this at all and each has a varied gaming scene just like any other, but does our gaming stereotypes reflect the gaming culture and history of each country i.e Jap RPG's and Jap development houses, or simply the perception to the outside of the country at large irrespective of gaming? i.e. USA loves it big!?

What is the perception of a UK/European gamer to those outside?

i'm not sure if i have expressed my thoughts and got accross what i was thinking, but thoughts anyway would be welcome.

    Thanks.

Most of the Euopeans that I've played with online didn't speak much English, so I couldn't tell ya.

The people from the UK were usually more polite than US gamers, but there was still a fair amount of stupid shit-talking, especially from the younger set.

The ones from Austrailia were usually drunk/talking smack, but in a laid-back way. Same with Canadians.

The times I've played with Japanese people were on SF2 matches with no voice chat, so again, I can't say anything about them either way, other than most of them whooped my ass :b

There was acutally a pretty interesting article in Game Informer a few months back that went through different countries and gave out their top games, preferred genres, etc.

That would be really interesting if anyone has any further details on that article?

In my experience, it's always been like this.

Japan loves RPG's or any game thats cute and has a anime/manga character somewhere in it, and hate any technologies made outside Japan.

US gamers tend to love shooters and racing games, and turn into retarded juveniles when they play online. It's an ego thing, I guess.

Don't have enough experiences with European or Aussie gamers to make a judgement.

I agree with diskoboy. I find that people who play online from the US are extremely rude in almost any occasion.. there are nice ones but usually the nice players stick together so you don't see them as much.

When I do see a online player from Europe they either don't speak English or are very kind. I've of course seen a few pricks but more times than none they're kind. I've seen people from the US bash a kid from England verbally until he actually cried. I heard it over the mic system.

Oh god, Brazil. Dear lord. The gamers that hang around the internet just plain hurt my soul.

I'm sure the countrymen are great, but fuck, most guys on the internet are total ASSTARDS.

A Korean gamer's life expectancy is only as long as they can survive continuously playing Starcraft without eating, drinking, sleeping, expeling waste or sometimes even breathe while defending against a Zerg rush. MMO's being the second leading cause of death.

Oh, and speaking of Russia - they're still using PDP-11's with games stored on ticker tape, and only play Tetris, because that's all their machines will run.

I'll put my thoughts into this as I play MASSIVE amounts of Uno online with voice and cam.

US: Drunks, chicks, stoners and drunken stoner chicks.

South - Very laid-back and nice is common especially in Florida and Texas but anywhere in between and above people are very ignorant, racist and annoying in general (Lee). Had to make a stupid pun.

SW - 50/50 divide between stoners and elitist assholes for the most part.

NW - My favorite of the US areas, always pleasant and seem to have the most common sense.

Midwest/North - Much like the South either really chill people or complete douche bags. Tend to say "Are you a cowboy HURRRR" quite a bit but usually the Northern most states are not like this.

NE - Arrogant assholes that hit on any female and are always bragging about some hot chick they banged or something. Brag about their overpriced weed way too much. Females tend to be very elitist or complete sluts.

Canada - My second favorite of all countries, always friendly and/or drunk and stoned. Can be "Fuck Bush blah blah blah" which gets annoying. A US citizen can't say he's in the military without someone getting into some elaborate political debate quite often.

Mexico - Uh, I speak very small amounts of conversational Spanish/Mex dialect and they seem to be very respectful and interesting.

South America - I can't understand the heavy Portuguese dialect but those that speak English tend to be quiet and not say much.

    Europe: A Complete Bi-Polar Society

UK - This Bi-polarness comes out a lot here we have assholes talking about "fuckin yanks", stoners once again, slutty chav chicks who are showing off their ass in a thong and talking about their fucking baby they just had and are only 14. Some people are genuine nice people though.

Norwiegian - Crazy drunken people who are all around awesome and will yell "Get out of the fuckin' way you crotch dropling" to their 5 y/o kids if they stand in front of the TV. A+ in my book.

Germany - Either very friendly or or insane sociopaths.

France - Sorry but fuck France, they usually speak English and yet speak French so they can win at Uno by beating Americans they play. The top 10 ten ranked players are almost all French for this very reason. Arrogant and annoying in general and I have yet to chat with a French person who wasn't obviously talking shit in French. "blah blah American blah blah Bush blah blah"

Italy - Don't have much experience on this one but they are not assholes and seem ok from my limited knowledge.

Belgium/Netherlands - Very talkative if they speak English and the women are easily seduced, leading to flashing and more if you aren't some social retard.

Eastern Europe - VERY friendly people and have a lot of respect for Americans for some reason.

    Asia:

China - Do not talk do not collect $200. Although they speak English they are quiet.

    S. Korea - Usually from the US but native Koreans seem hellbent on destruction and chaos much like how they play Starcraft, completely ruthless.

Japan - Don't see many, but how many people in Japan have a 360 20,000 maybe. I've only played with a few males don't talk and females are interested in American society and you seem to end up repeating yourself a lot. Heh, not much I can say.

    Australia/New Zealand:

By FAR my favorite area. Drink, swear, smoke weed, fight and in the end everyone is friends. It's appears to be my Garden of Eden. I have probably 20 people on my friends list from this region despite usually being asleep when they would be online. However NEVER call them British or ask them if they are from the UK and they are 99% of the time interesting and chill people.

Wow, that's quite an informative list, not to mention bringing the topic back to what it was meant.

The main experience I've had with British people online is mostly as described above, but nicer and laid back, sorta like Canadians, except some of the Canadians are just as bad as Americans with their mouths.

I don't really group people based on country, but by how they play the game, which will occasionally fall neatly in line with their country. These experiences are based on online play, mainly Team Fortress 2 on Xbox Live.

Many of the Spanish-speaking gamers who are in a game with a fellow Spanish-speaking friend just goof off and don't really know what they're doing.

Most British adults are pretty decent and often know what they're doing. British kids, however, don't know shit, sound funny when they cuss (a lot) and like to play team coach, yet remarkably end up on the bottom of the scoreboard every time.

Canadians are by and large pretty decent to play with, but don't seem to talk a lot from my experience.

College-age kids (mostly US-based) love to reference "smoking a bowl" if at all possible (similar to how nerds will go out of their way to mention their "girlfriend"), and have a horrible habit of not muting their fucking mic before answering their cell phone or yelling to their friend/roommate.

There was outcry a few weeks ago when a video surfaced of a player with the gamertag xxxGayBoyxxx or something similar posted a video of the homophobia he faced playing on Halo 3. It could be argued that by picking a name like that, he sort of wanted attention in the first place, and in fact I've played Shadowrun with a guy with a similar name who did nothing but talk in the most stereotypically gay voice possible and reference gay sex. However, my Xbox Live name, which is the same as it is here, has drawn all sorts of xenophobia from my fellow Americans, who love to namedrop Hiroshima, Nagasaki and the Atomic Bomb. Also, every tenth person I play with feels the need to makeshift karaoke the Vapors' "Turning Japanese" like I've never been exposed to their brand of 'witty' repartee.

That should be "settee", and it's an English slang for sofa or couch.

LMAO @ Sothy, should be interesting when I get around to buying a 360 and going online

I live in Italy so most of my online gaming (recently with COD4) is with them. They are pretty good, cant understand a god damn thing they say because italians speak so freaking fast...

In real life, they are assholes who cant drive worth shit. Well, maybe only the ones from Naples... but i hate the i-ties bc of the napolitans.... why? Because the rest of italy wont come here and kick thier ass until they learn to behave like normal people. I feel like I live in a barnyard!

However, they are pretty decent at COD4.

the only international players I could understand were people from the UK who called me variations of the "yank insult." I was hardly insulted. This was when I played Outrun 2 many years back.
