Default FPS over 3rd Person shooter?

Anyone else prefer first person shooters much more than 3rd person shooters? I am playing Gears of War right now for the first time (i know) and I just wish that it is a first person shooter.

Games seems much more comfortable to me when its a first person shooter

I'm the exact opposite. I want to see my character on screen. When I get hit, I want to see the hit. It's not enough for the screen to flash a color or shake a little bit. I want to exactly where I was hit and no why I couldn't avoid it. FPS is something that I have played an enjoyed, but are way on the bottom of my prefered games list. I'll take 3'rd over 1'st any day.

Depends on the execution of the perspective. I absolutely love when a game puts you in the first person and never lets you go (such as in Far Cry Instincts, Half Life 2, or Breakdown) and I really dig when the camera is placed in the character's actual eyes (Gore, Breakdown, Chronicles of Riddick, etc).

A well done third person shooter with an over the shoulder view totally gets me going as well (Rogue Trooper could use some love, here).

I really like the over the shoulder view as well, Gears of War and Resident Evil 4 are two of my favorite games.

It seems to work well for Ghost Recon also.

I have the opposite preference. In first person, you have no peripheral vision and it's too easy to get blindsided.

It's weird to some, but 3rd (in most cases) just ends up providing a better experience on consoles. There are some excellent examples of how to do console FPS right and also make it feel right (Wii-waggle is getting so close to keyboard/mouse bliss) but, overall, I still believe FPS is king on the PC. Maybe analog sticks simply translate better to 3rd than 1st?

In racers I like my camera to double as a hood-ornament though. Helps me spatially and keeps my reaction sharp for intense cornering. Plus, it enhances the illusion/tension of speed.

Gears' really changed my mind on this subject. I used to be infinitely biased towards first person shooters. But after Gears' and Resident Evil, I can't go without my periph.

My wife refuses to play games with a 1st person view, but loves to play 3rd person games. Ratchet & Clank is her favorite shooter. She loves 3rd person dungeon crawlers too - Baldurs Gate, Norrath, ect. I think those have alot to do with being able to dress and outfit her character.
I love those games too, but I always know that I'm playing some character in a game. With 1st person games, I can forget that I'm a character in a game and allow my suspension of disbelief to put me in the story in the character's place. The game somehow becomes much more engaging because I feel everything is happening to me personaly instead of to some character.

If you like Gears of Wars, you should try Bullet Witch. A great Japanese take of the run and gun style, only with confusing controls for the magic attacks.
Currently catching up on PSN, WiiWare, Wii U E-Shop and Xbox Live Arcade exclusives I missed.

I like 3rd person if its done right, like God of War and Rygar for the PS2. I absolutely hate over the shoulder, like RE4. I couldn't get used to the perspective so I never got far into the game.

FPS is always my favorite, as long as the axis can be inverted, which is not really a problem as much as it used to be with some games.

I much prefer 3rd person. Helps with immersion. For me, first person takes me out of the environment completely while 3rd person gives me all the context.

I love both really, the "immersion" factor is of no consequence for me
as my mind is always well aware I am just playing a game, I actually like
the fact that I am well aware that I am merely controlling a character
in an fantasy setting. That said I loved RE4 but over all I enjoy each
perspective as they were designed, I will say though in a driving type game
I prefer outside the car view, I like to fully see my vehicle in front of me as
opposed to the in-the-car view, I know I am not really driving a car so I
want to see the car I am controlling....................

I much prefer third person shooters. I play both, but then I play most everything, too.

I agree. FPS games tend to make me a little seasick, too.

It's funny because I've never experienced motion sickness from playing a video game. I've read where some developer's suffer from it and only make games with perspectives that won't make them sick to play.
I do experience vertigo while playing some games. But I enjoy the Hell out of the fact that a game can make me queazy!
So for the fans of 3rd person games, are there any that bother to model character damage. If I can see my character, then I'd definately expect to see limbs shot off. Otherwise, what's the point?
