Default Turbo Grafx and PC-Engine Questions

So far from what I have read, the two are one in the same. TG16 - US Name, PC Engine - Japan.

I have a TG-16, want the CD Add-On (So i can play my copy of Dracula X for PC Engine). Also was looking at getting the Super System Card to addon to make it more like a real Turbo Duo.

That being said, can I use the Super System Card imported from Japan? They seem to be a lot cheaper.

Also, if anyone has any better info on the TG16/PC Engine lay it on me. I never really took too much time to learn anything about the thing and its one of the next setups Id like to have more of

It sounds like you are starting out the same way I did with TG16/PC Engine stuff. I was curious about all the hoopla so I invested in a CD Attachment as well as a hucard convertor and a bunch of games. I lucked out on the converter as someone was selling them in bulk so I got mine for $30 but I know that usually they go for upwards of $60 or more. After playing around with the system it wasn't my bag and I haven't really done much with it since beating Dracula X, Ninja Spirit, and Ys. I liked Ys alot so I'm looking at buying IV and burning the translation patch but that's about it. I'm not big into Shmups, which is what the system excels in, so I've kind of lost interest. I still enjoy reading about the system and its games but I sadly am not cool and trendy and tend to lean towards "mainstream" games.

I've always been curious about the NEO Geo as well but I'm not into fighters so I know that if I spent the money the system would sit. I think each system has its treasures that draw people in but unless there are a lot of games that are really going to hold your attention you should think twice before investing a ton of money.

I've learned the hard way but fortunately if you are unhappy with something you can usually resell it for about what you paid for it. The beauty of classic gaming is that prices don't fluctuate that quickly so I guess buy up whatever you can and if its not to your liking find someone else who wants to give it a try.

Well, if you want to sell any of it let me know...

Neo Geo is my next big purchase. Samurai Showdown is one of my most favorite aracade games, even though I am horrible. Plus, I remember one jerk kid in elementary school that got one for xmas and bragged about it so much that it made me want one so bad... now I can afford it, so i may just get it!

If you've got a US Turbo, the Japanese cards won't work in it without an adaptor. This includes the system cards.

if your getting into tg-16/PCE i would suggest getting a region modded Duo-R. there not really very expensive and if you get it region modded you can play US and JP HU cards as well as the CD games without worrying about the cards, except for the arcade card. though if you already have a tg-16 and a cd attachment i guess that may be wasteful.

you mentioned Neo-Geo. if you want to get into that but are not sure about liking it. go the MVS route. it may be a little more expensive but in the long run with games you save a ton.

One word region mod it for a TG16 any ways.

Realy it's that simple given converters for it are too costly these days.

I recomend it since a jpn 3.0 super system card is "cheaper" and is more common compare to the u.s one.

Heck even a (arcade pro card) would work just as well too.

Just a suggestion if you wanna play any scd game since dracula x is one.

The,other option of corse is getting a duo-r or rx since is has the 3.0 built in all ready.

I have a Japanese Duo. All the games that interest me are Japanese, so I have no need for converters.

You do realize that you NEED the Super System Card to play Dracula X, right? It won't work with the original System Card.

Agreed. Converters are expensive these days for some reason. Very strange considering how simple the device is... I wish the connectors were more easily available.

Heck even a arcade pro card would just as well too.
If you're going to go the Japanese route, just get an Arcade Card and forget about the other ones. The Arcade Card has all the features of the Super System Card and then some... plus, it's usually cheaper and easier to find than the Super System Card. Just make sure you get the Arcade Card *PRO* unless you have a Duo... in which case the Arcade Card Duo is a bit cheaper.

The,other option of corse is getting a duo-r or rx since is has the 3.0 built in all ready.
Pre-modded Duo-R(X)'s are pretty common on eBay for a little over $200... It's generally cheaper than getting a North American Duo, or TG16+CD+SSC combo.

Yes I KNOW I NEED that card.

Edit, sorry, didnt mean that to be a dick sentence. I know I need that card, I like to collect as much random stuff as possible... so more than likely ill end up with the Duo-R and a TG-16 with all the monster addons... FWIW, i am one of the crazy people that like the Genesis, 32X, CD mamoth because it looks so cool!

If you like monstrosities go for the Super Grafx and Super CD ROM2

It only had about 5 games released and will enhance some, like the Darius games.

Even worse, they made an adapter so you could hook the SGX into the old white briefcase-style PC-E CD-ROM. The resulting mess makes the 32X look like an engineering marvel. I can't seem to find a picture of the whole setup, but here's the adapter:

Hook an SGX onto the black end of it, and stuff the white end into the briefcase, and you have quite possibly the least attractive setup in gaming history! And you'd still need a System 3.0 or Arcade Card in order to play anything but the earliest CD games. I've always wanted to get this stuff and set it up just for shits and giggles. For a sense of scale, the white part is the same size as the original PC-Engine. Why the black end is so big is a mystery to me.

Oh, and for the hardest of hardcore PC Engine fans, here's the SuperGrafx Power Console:

This giant controller is apparently meant to fit ON TOP of the SuperGrafx! I don't know why they thought that would be a good idea... they put cords on controllers for a reason... in any case, it's one of the rarest things in raretown.

I have the SuperGrafx+Super CDROM2 and the original white PC Engine with the original side mounting white CD unit... both are very sexy! The CoreGrafx and the SUPER CDROM2 unit is also a cool looking setup.

Also, the Super CDROM2 has the system card 3.0 built in.

your forgetting IMO the rarest game of them all:

Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire (HUDSON SOFT)
    ARCADE CARD CD-ROM2 (JAPANESE VERSION)

    Review
    YouTube Video of Stage 1

A solid game, excellent soundtrack, and using YES POLYGONS... What the hell? Polygons.. Thanks to the Arcade System Card you get 3 MB of Video RAM.. Thats a huge amount and too bad not a lot of games used the Arcade card.

I love Sapphire's soundtrack. I ripped mine to my iPod and listen to it at work all the time. Gotta love those synth guitars.

If your looking for an affordable but not too terribly official copy of Sapphire, you might want to check out this website:
