    Default Tecmo Classic Arcade on 360 STILL DOESN'T WORK...or does it?

    Okay.

    What gives Microsoft?

    Last year Tecmo Classic Arcade was added to the 360 Backwards Compatibility List ... and was in turn listed as compatible on the SKU of the price sticker at Game Stop.

    When I saw the price of the game NEW was a measly $5.99, I snatched it up if for no other reason the wonderful arcade version of Bomb Jack.

    I was shocked at the time when I popped it into my 360 only to find that it was in fact NOT compatible, even after it looked for and found it's "update" (it displays some strange error when attempting to boot).

    So, when I saw that it was RE-Included in the LATEST B.C. list, I jumped for joy, ran to my studio and fished it out of my "stored" non-compatible XBOX games ... only to find ONCE AGAIN THAT IT'S STILL NOT COMPATIBLE!!!

    WHAT THE HELL?

    Who is making these lists ... and WHY does this game keep winding up on them if it doesn't work!?

    Is there anybody else out there that is feeling me on this one?

    Come on.

    I decided not to own a Xbox 360. So far I've had no troubles with faulty Microsoft products.

    (sigh)

    You know, sometimes you won't find your car keys until you stop looking for them.

    And sometimes you won't figure something simple and game-related out on your own until you post a thread on DP out of sheer frustration...

    ...just out of curiosity, I attempted a few things :

    I tried booting it without the HDD attached (still got the error)
    I tried changing the screen ratio from widescreen to 4:3

    and I scaled back the resolution from 1080p to 720p, to 720i, and finally 480p.

    With the combination of the screen in 4:3 mode and 480p, the system bypassed the error and I got to play Tecmo Classics for the first time since I bought it a year ago!!!!

    Now ... if you happened to open this thread and read all the way through ... my thanks go out to you for caring about my plight.

    You rock.

    Tecmo should have said something ... but considering that nobody really gives a crap about that game vs. say Ninja Gaiden Black ... I can't imagine them doing so.

    And, technically speaking, Microsoft doesn't actually "make" the compatability patches the developers do ... so I probably shouldn't have yelled at Microsoft.

    Oh well, it's not a bad collection, though some of the emulation is wonky via 360 use.

    Its well known that Tecmo Classic Arcade doesn't support higher resolutions than 480p in BC mode. Not all Xbox 360 BC titles can be upscaled to 1080p, some only can do lower resolutions.

    I had hoped the last BC update had allowed it to work at higher resolutions, but I haven't tried it. Apparantly it doesn't.

    Um.

    By "well known"...

    ... you of course mean ...

    The myriad of Official Websites devoted to Tecmo Classic Arcade that have sections clearly detailing this info.

    Or, the clear, explanatory error that my 360 presented me with when I initially tried to run it. (Approximation of error - sidebar slides in - this game encountered an error 100058:52100 returning to dashboard)

    Or the easy to find solution when you google "Tecmo Classic Arcade 360 Backwards Compatibility Issues".

    Yes, clearly "well known".

    Seriously though ... how did you know about it, because I've never found anything regarding upscaling errors on older titles ... you'd think the 360 would just default to a lower resolution by default.

    Microsoft makes the BC patches. It is possible for developers to make their own, but i'm not sure if any have (i think a few of the later xbox releases might have had them on the disc itself).

    And no, the resolution thing isn't well known. And yes, the error messages on the 360 suck.

    Not that you should have to, but if you called that error code into microsoft's help line, they would have told you to change your resolution. In reality, they should either have an option for auto-rescale or have meaningful error messages...

    Really? I thought Microsoft said that it's not their responsibility to construct backwards compatibility patches for (non-1st party obviously) XBOX releases, and that we'd only be getting them as developers decided to work on them / submit them to MS.

    BC is all Microsoft, developers are not involved.

    And perhaps well known wasn't very good wording, but I've seen it mentioned at multiple places and its even listed at Wikipedia's list of BC Xbox games.

    Although I don't have a 360, I do have a regular XBOX. I have had a small handful of titles that have not worked on anything higher than 480i, so I have had to change the XBOX settings a few times to make these titles work. Not that the original XBOX scales the way a 360 does... but when a few of my games didn't work I tried disabling all the resolutions but the default (480i) and these games worked. One title I can remember clearly was Panzer Dragoon Orta. Again though, I never did any research to see if these were real documented problems- I just experimented with a few things to try and make these work.

    That's normal, not all Xbox titles support progressive scan. I'm confused why you'd have to change settings though, I think I have all resolutions checked and it just chooses the highest resolution supported for each game I play.

    Panzer Dragoon Orta is only 480p compatible on early model Xbox's, something was changed in later revisions that broke PDO's progressive scan ability.
