What's wrong with the way it looks?

There's an interview with this game's creator in the Game Room magazine from a couple months back. Most interesting is the "falling pie" sprite that he found in the code but was not used in the game.

So how long before a ROM is out?

They pretty much all are, but they have some new gameplay mechanics. I'd scan the article, but I have no scanner

    Back from the dead!

Anyone here play this or own it in hardware form? I like it, but still haven't managed to get past the 3rd board. Mostly because I didn't realize that there were rivets to jump over in the refinery level. I'm only at about 11500.

Well I guess you'd have to own it in hardware form. After looking around on the net, the ROM is either hard to get or not available. So it's likely that no one here as played it.

Anyway I was able to get a high score of 16,300 so far and I made it to the Incinerator level. It's pretty tough at that point and I've not made it up the first ladder yet.

Seriously though, no DK owners here that have purchased this? You're missing out.

I've played it at the last two California Extreme shows, in addition to hearing the programmer speak in.... 2008 if I remember correctly. Lots of fun, but not as challenging as the original (in the sense of timing) once you figure out what to do.

Yeah, a lot of the stages seem to have tricks that you have to figure out and then you're set. I've been getting to the 5th board, and still no repetition, which is a big change from the original. The toughest part of the original for me is the 3rd elevators, which I've only beaten once or twice. I think it'll hold up over time- right now I'me loving it, although it can be frustrating.

I'm glad they're still DK2. And thisoldgame.com is still selling the 'official' artwork. I'm thinking about gutting my SMB, painting it "sapphire sparkle", and putting in DK2 sometime this summer. This year, since I spent all last summer working on my Pac-Man, I'll be giving more attention to my Nintendo cab.

I just don't wanna turn it into a JAMMA machine... When DK2 was first released, wasn't it a simple daughter card add-on, or ROM swap on the 2-board versions of DK/DKjr?

No it still is. There's a JAMMA multi board that you can buy that has it on there now, but the original kit is still a plug in via a daughter card... You unplug the z80 and plug the board into it. It works on the 4 board and 2 board version of Donkey Kong.

I posted on how to do it here.

My z80 was soldered to the PCB, but most aren't.

Excellent. I just found myself a summer project! Now to find someone who's got a DK PCB for sale. Or someone who will do a trade/cash deal, to get rid of the Vs. PCB.

I played it a couple of times over at a friend's house. I think I only got to the 3rd screen once. The timing on screen two takes a while to get.

It's a very well done, and worthy sequel.
    Much harder than Donkey Kong.
    I top out around 80,000.

I have a full cabinet with the artwork. It doesn't get any love. When random people are over they can't even past the first stage.

Older picture, but you can see the cabinet:

Funspot has a DKII cab. I only played a single credit, and it was more just to say I played it than for anything else. It was cool enough I suppose. I had no idea of the history behind it until I returned home from FS.

I was actually more impressed with the cab and artwork than I was the game itself.

That's an awesome lineup. It sucks that no one plays the game. It' sorta hard, but you can figure it out after playing it a while. Although I understand that most of those who play it are already die hard DK fans- which sort of limits the audience.
