IIRC OT was developed here in MN by a company called MECC, I think they did educational software. I played OT (plus other MECC games) in grade school all the time.

Maybe a google search on MECC can help, but I wouldnt know the 1st thing about tracking it down...

    Because I'm so nice....

But you may run into trouble if you're using Firefox. The plugin used to play the game won't install on my machine.

Actually, there's an even earlier version than that written in BASIC (see here and Wikipedia), but the Apple II version is the one that people are most familiar with.

There's also a version at Home of the Underdogs ("Oregon Trail Deluxe) that closely resembles the Apple II version (and is thus very much unlike "5th edition" or whatever).

And there are some very good approximations mentioned in this thread. (Thule Trail is teh awsome.)

They key to OT is hunting. Not only do you replenish your food supplies, but you heal up, too. Never rest - always hunt!

I preferred ACS on the C-64, myself....

The SID music sounded so good.

And I happen to be a huge fan of VirtualApple, too. I play Spare Change, Stellar 7, Hard Hat Mack, and Star Blazers all the damn time.

When I was in 5th grade I think, again, we only had Apple ]['s in our computer room in 1989, I think I used to be able to beat OT in like 15 minutes.

That is a cool site indeed, but alas, I cannot seem to get the Firefox plugin to install. Hate IE, will not use!

Did you hear that this is being released on XBox Live Arcade? It's gonna feature online multiplayer and three dimensional re-rendered graphics. Honest.

Got linkage? I kind of fail to see how they could introduce online multiplayer without totally redesigning the game. It better not be some misguided attempt to pass off this "5th Edition" multimedia thing as a substitute for the original.

Hmm that's not the one I remember playing... we had one on the little black and white Macs at school.

Dick died, Jane died, Joe died, you win!

Great web site. I also could not get the plugin to work in Firefox, but I played some games in Internet Explorer. I beat Oregon Trail for the first time. I also relived some Apple IIgs classics like Sea Strike and Tass Times in Tone Town. I couldn't figure out the controls in Hardball though.

Ok just played it for like 45 minutes... everyone kept dying even when I'd rest for like 7 days... then theives would steal 3 oxen (and I only had one left) and 200 bullets... then my wagon burned. Then everyone had broken arms or legs. I got typhoid and died about halfway through.

    Seriously, that game is impossible.

Yeah I beat it on my first try as a banker, and on my first try again as a carpenter. Next as the farmer! Seems a lot easier than I remember.

I think one of the tricks is to travel FAST. Buy lots of ox and set the grueling pace. Why? Because out of all the random events, the bad ones are WAAAAAAY worse than the good ones are good. Yay, you found fruit. Whee. You found a wagon tongue. Yippy.

Since you can only get one bad (or good) thing per day, the faster you travel, the better your odds of not hitting too many events. And remember to hunt, not rest. You still heal, and AFAIK, no bad things will be triggered on a hunting day.
