    Default 360 making screeching noise

Started yesterday, When i stop a game and return to the 360 blades the disc will *SCREECH* when its about to stop, it also screeches when i start my 360 and theres a game inside??? Its not hurting the discs and every thing's fine besides this horrible sound it makes 'knock on wood', Does anybody have this problem or know whats the cause? is my time running out?

This happened to my friend's 360. It doesn't mess up your disks, but your 360's disk drive is crapping out. Your 360 will die a slow and painful death. Eventually it will stop reading disks altogether. That's when you send it back to M$.

This should clear up your warranty questions http://www.xbox.com/en-US/support/sy...arrantyfaq.htm

Basically, you have 1 year from date of purchase for any repairs, (unless damaged by you) and 3 years for the RROD

Yes. Even if you bought a launch console, you're covered until, at least November.

And MS needs to find a new drive manufacturer. I now believe the DVD drive as one of the main culprits behind all these RRoD's.

I made a similar thread in Technical and Restoration a few months back.

Apparently, it's a buildup of dust on the disc spindle.

It's not harmful to the disc, and only causes the slippage/screeching noise on spin-down, however RyanMurf (who does a lot of 360 repairs) speculates that it could likely get so bad that you'll get disc read errors mid-game.

I'm pretty sure the system will need to be opened to have the spindle cleaned, so find somebody who knows what they're doing if you can't do it yourself.

Mine has also just started doing this but I bought the 3 year warranty so I'm not too concerned.

My 360 was replaced due to rrd and my dvd drive door would only eject sometimes. I am waiting for the box to return the system that was under warranty.

From my experience in repairing some 360's, it is either dust on the spindle, or the rubber pad no longer having "grip".

See, when a drive stops a disc from spinning like a brake, it actually reverses the motor. If the spindle slips, imagine a car tire hydroplaning on a wet ground. The spindle is moving faster than the disc itself.

Btw, RRoD in my experience, is cold solder joints, due to the lead-free solder, and cracking from the heat. I've never found which chip exactly, but it's either GPU or CPU it seems.

X-Clamp on the CPU putting enough pressure on the solder pads to break them off the mobo when the console warms up. At least, that's the short version.

Yup this is exactly what happens. It is not really anything to worry about until you get a disc read error. In that case you just replace the spindle or clean your xbox.

A couple weeks ago I began getting this horrible noise too. Shortly after, one of my games stopped working. I have no warranty, so I'll check that spindle. I had no idea. Thanks guys!

Who's the manufacturer of the drive? So I know who NOT to buy from.

Mine looks like a Samsung, judging from this:

ADD: My tray also has difficulty opening from time to time.
