Using the portuguese word "fita", which is the same as "tape", to refer to a game cartdrige ("cartucho", in portuguese) is very common here in Brazil too. Back in the 2600 days, I asked my dad for "Atari tapes".
Why do people (worldwide, it seems) think cartridges are similar to tapes, I'll never know. But it was - and still is - the most common term for them in my homestate.
Blowing on cartridges since 1987
Some games actually were on tape.

I have yet to encounter such a thing, but if anyone were to call a CD a tape, or a Dr. Pepper a Coke, I would be extremely annoyed.

I remember seeing some Super Famicom games and they said "cassette" on the back, that probably has something to do with games still being called tapes.
I don't have any Super Famicom games now, but can anyone check to confirm this? Are all of them labeled "cassette"?
Hmm, I smell a food de jour topic being posted soon by porksta.
What I get annoyed at is when people ask stupid questions about video games or computers.
I actually used to get in trouble back when I was doing tech support phone calls for Earthlink because the people I dealt with seriously had mental problems. All the horror stories you have been told are all true.
"Thank you for calling earthlink, can I help you."
"I can't check my e-mail."
"Maam, is your computer turned on."
"No, I just bought it, it is still in the box."
I am not kidding, that happened to me more than once.
Call it me owing 40k in student loans to be knowledgable about computers, but I get frusterated when I am asked a stupid computer questions because I have this wierd notion that if you are not willing to learn how to use something, don't use it.
I stopped fixing people's computers, but now tell them what to do in order to fix it. if they do it, it works, if not, then no computer for them.
Another pet peeve are younger people that seem to have never had any piece of technology around them as if they lived in the back woods of <add your own state with back woods> and now they can't figure out the most simple fucking thing with technology when there is a step by step instruction manual right there beside them so they call the computer guy assuming that I own the new 25,000 iPod and I am an expert with it. I open up their instruction book and show them what to do.
Call it egocentric from going to school, but I am in debt for that shit and pushed myself to learn it, and then there are people that refuse to fucking learn. A perfect example is another earthlink story that I have gotten multiple times:
"Thank you for calling Earthlink. How can I help you?"
"My internet doesn't work. Fix it."
"Maam, what is wrong with it?"
"I don't know. Send somebody out to fix it."
"Maam, we will go through some troubleshooting steps to help you fix this."
"No, just send somebody out to fix it."
AAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!
I lived in the south when I was younger and never used the word 'pop'. I live in the north-east now and say 'soda'. And only use the word 'coke' when talking about Coca-Cola. When I went to college in the midwest however, nearly everyone from the region (Ohio) said 'pop'. I remember thinking it was really funny..they did not.
So much for trying to stay on-topic...
Old-school drives me absolutely crazy. Probably because I used to work at a game store and would hear it used about 100 times a day in this context: "No way! They got that old school Nintendo! Remember (insert name of game that everyone remembers)?!" And then they wouldn't buy anything.
I once heard a kid say "They got that old school Nintendo!"but he pointed at a weird area of the store. When I looked to see what he was talking about I saw that he was pointing at a Nintendo 64. I died a little inside that day.
